If media creator 9 suite is installed on my computer, none of my players can play mpeg videos. they all say "[program] has encountered an error and needs to close". Windows media player, realplayer, and DivX all do this with any mpeg 2 video video. Other video types (avi and wmv) work fine on all players. Oblivion also fails a few screens in when I load it, I assume the intro movie is mpeg. I have tried a couple codecs. Uninstalling fixes the problem but I don't want to reinstall every time I burn a DVD.

Basic specs (custom built):
Vista Home Premium
Core 2 Duo e6700 @ 3.2 Ghz
2 GB DDR2 ram
8800GTX water cooled Graphics
320 Gb SATA pri. HDD
Abit AW9-D MAX Motherboard
Hauppage (sp?) Win TV PVR USB II tuner
20" 1680*1050 LCD

Anyone have any ideas? I will try other codecs if someone knows where to get some good codecs.

This may be of interest to you, even though it isn't Vista. I don't remember other posts saying they can't play mpeg files with EMC 9 installed, but you can use the search feature in the upper right corner.

Edit: Were you ever prompted to activate the mpeg codec?

BTW, there are many posts about problems with EMC and the game, Oblivion. They too, can be found, using the search function.

Thanks but my disk recognizes and starts, just crashes at the intro screen. the first menu comes up, you click play, then afew screens later, it fails.

I never was prompted to activate codecs, answering your question.

That could very well be part of your problem. I have no clue what you can do about it. You should eventually get the prompt.

I can record, in mpeg 2 format, with the recording tool. In the recorder there is a barebone video player that plays recently recorded videos, and that will play the recorded videos. If I find them in my computer and play them, it wont work. this seems to me like the codec is working then. I don't fully understand what a codec is, but i know the basic purpose.

When should I get a prompt?

You should get the prompt when using VideoWave or MyDVD. I don't know if this will solve the problem and have no clue why a mpeg file won't play in the other programs.

I'm not getting a prompt to activate the codec. I don't really have any idea what the problem is at this point.

I got it fixed. ORB, a program that came with my TV tuner and let me connect to my tv and media on my computer over the internet, was the problem I think. I uninstalled that and now stuff works again. other than the random restarts from my not quite perfected overclock.
