CD Key error - patch not working

I uninstalled Roxio when I was switching hard drives. I did a clean install per the instructions on the support website. No trace of Roxio. I attempted to re-install, but was told that my CD Key was not valid.

I contacted support - they sent me the link to the patch. When I try to open the exe file, it says I do not have permission to open the file. I tried opening it as an Administrator - still wouldn't open. I turned off all virus checks, etc. Still won't open.

I am running Windows XP.

Any advice? I am still waiting on support to get back to me. The last guy told me it was a problem with my computer and there was nothing more they could do for me, because the file is good.

a bit of a long shot but did you try downloading the file again (in case it was a corrupted download? Also, did you try booting into safe mode and running it from there?

I presume you did extract it (if it's zipped which I assume it is)
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I did extract it - I tried it with 2 different extracting programs just to be sure. I have downloaded it 3 times.

I can't start in safe mode, because I am using a USB keyboard. My PS/2 port is no longer working and will not detect my old keyboard. Is there anyway of starting safe mode with a USB keyboard?

Thanks for the help.

If your BIOS allows you to boot from a USB device then yes it's possible,I use one.Thing is if it's not already turned on in the BIOS you'll probably need a PS/2 keyboard to get into the BIOS in the first place to turn it on.
Are you sure it's the port and not the PS/2 keyboard that's gone out?

Yea, the keyboard stopped working a while back. I bought a new PS/2 keyboard and that one didn't work either, and then I borrowed one that I knew was working, and it didn't work either. So I'm pretty sure it's the port.

Thanks for the help - I'll keep working on it.

I got it working! I went thru msconfig to the BOOT.INI tab and checked the safe mode option. When I restarted, it automatically went into safe mode.

I was able to open the file in safe mode, and have already installed Roxio.

Thanks, gi7omy, for recommending the safe mode install. Thank you to everyone else who provided feedback!

Glad it worked - it was a bit of a long shot I admit but obviously something in your OS has decided that you can't be trusted to open files. Strange one - did you try a malware and a/v sweep to see if you may have picked up something that could have caused it?

I am also glad that you got it working... I have run into this before (not with roxio).

As another solution, right click on the file you don't have permissions for. Select properties, then click on the security tab.

Then take ownership of the file, then add security permissions for your user name or group.

I can't tell you the exact "step by step". The options change a bit if you have "simple file sharing" enabled or not.
