I am using video wave in EMC9 which was great, and swift, for my first project. But now, in my second project, after about 5 minutes editing at a good pace, it slows to snails pace. (and a very slow snail at that)  If I reboot I get the same cycle of quick then slow.  I've done a 'clean install' (method by courtesy of 'dlebryk' in this forum) and even bought 'RegCure' to clean up the virtual memory but still no improvement. I'd be glad of any advice for a fix.  Regards, Richard

Rendering is, unfortunately, painfully slow. The only advice really is to make sure that ALL background apps are shut down (IMs and so on) and to go eat dinner and maybe watch some TV while it does its thing. That's why we recommend using one of the spyware/malware programs to clean out anything that may be lurking unknown to you.

Also, defrag the drive before starting to render (stops the heads having to hunt round everywhere for the next bit of the file)

Regarding virtual memory - if you have a second hard drive, set that to there (it does help) as does setting it to a fixed size (both max and min to at least double and maybe even 2.5 times the size of your physical RAM). If nothing else it stops pagefile.sys from fragmenting
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Thanks.  I don't think I'm 'rendering', just altering still image duration, and text effect positions, etc.  (or is that what you mean) It takes up to and even over a minute for each change.  As it is I defraged a couple of days ago, but I will try your other suggestions now.  Just in case I am rendering.  Thanks again.

Did the suggestions help speed it up any?

If not, what is your computer's video card, processor speed, and memory? (you can find this by start->run, then type in dxdiag)

Thanks for continued interest.
I've changed virtual memory size to 1500 and also set RoxioHardDriveWatch and RoxioMedia to manual in Services.msc (courtesy of other advice found in this forum) but my machine is still on a go slow after 5 or 10 minutes.
As the program is swift when I first startup, I've been closing down and rebooting when I get frustrated, to get the speed back.
The processor is AMD Athlon 64 (3400+) 2.4 ghz,  Ram 512 MB,  Video card is Radeon 9800 Pro.

You really need a lot more physical RAM - 512 MB is bare minimum
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Great, maybe I've clogged up with too many other programs since I got EMC9.
Funnily enough, as this project is important (Son and daughter-in-law's early photos and courtship through to wedding album - don't tell them, its a secret) I was looking around just in case I need to replace this machine, and noticed that todays norm seems to have gone up from 1 GB to 2 GB.  Maybe that's something to do with Vista.
But, I'm going to go your way and get another 512 MB.
Thanks again, advice very much appreciated.

Basically - stick in as much as you can afford and don't forget to increase the size of pagefile.sys in proportion (it always struck me as strange that the more physical RAM you had - the bigger the virtual memory had to be, but that's doze for you)

Let us know how it worked out

Okay, thanks.  Tomorrow I'm taking a break for a week, and will get back onto this when I'm back.
Will let you know if this is the magic pill then.

For gi7omy
I've fitted 2 GB of ram and after reseting the virtual memory to 'system managed' EMC is as consistently swift.  The only slow thing now is                      m     e.
Thanks for your valuable advice.
Regards, Richard
