Ok, I'm an old hand at CD burning but have just entered the wild world of DVDs... I'm trying to burn my first video DVD from 4 half hour TV shows. I'm burning to disk image using MyDVD 9, and the encoding just... sort of...sits there. at 0%.

How long should this take? When should I see progress? I've got a 2.16Ghz Intel Core2 processor and 1 gb RAM, and it's a Dell Latitude 620.

Also, I've got the nVidia Quadro NVS 110m graphics.

Last bit - yes, I got there from the start menu, not the home app.

Tried installing the new drivers... no go (actually just reinstalled my old drivers, as there don't appear to be new ones for XP)
Also tried switching from hardware to software. No dice. I've been trying to make an image file.

My next step is to install on my wife's machine & try it there, as she has a completely different hardware profile.

Mine doesn't sit at 0% long at all. If you don't see some movement after 30 minutes, I'd say there's a problem.
First, make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and updated DirectX. Go into Tools/Options and see what your rendering is set to....hardware or software. Switch to the opposite of how it's set and try again. Your system is fine for this type of work.♠

Just as a rough rule of thumb so you know what you're looking at: to render 4 half hour clips will take about 2 - 3 hours depending on a lot of variables.

As the final output is going to be double the size of a standard single layer DVD (that holds roughly 1 hour video at 'best quality', I'd advise you to send the output to an image file on the hard drive. This will make a .iso image that you can open with Disc Copier which will 'shrink' it to fit. There will be some loss of quality so check it on a RW disc first to see if it's satisfactory

That being the case, updating the video drivers should do the trick. It did for me and has for others. If you already have the most current, unistall them, reboot to the plain MS VGA drivers, then install them.
