I’ve been using Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 for three years now, burning over 100 DVDs and over 50 CDs with only an occasional glitch burning DVDs. Today my attempt to burn a DVD was a real hassle. The entire process went without a hitch till I went to burn the project. At this time the computer sounded like it was working overtime. I checked task manager and the computer was fluctuating between 15% and 60% constantly. After waiting for five minutes the action of the computer did not cease. This happened several times in my attempt to burn the DVD. I restored to a previous date which did not help. I removed Roxio Easy Media Creator and reinstalled it which did not help. Now the question is, is the problem caused by Roxio, the DVD burner or is my hard drive ready to bite the bullet?

It's easy to test the burner. Just try burning a few audio cd's in Windows Media Player. Not as intensive as a DVD but if it fails an audio cd, you'll know it.
Have you defragged your hard drive lately? Run Scandisk? Certainly won't hurt but surely will help.

Also - download and run a spyware/malware program and let that do a sweep. Try http://www.lavasoft.com for adaware SE or http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html for Spybot S&D - both free for personal use

Aren't there two lasers in a DVD \ CD-R combo optical drive?
How would burning one tell you anything about the other?

Yes, I there are 2 diodes as far as I know. One for DVD's and one for CD's as die used on CD's is not the same as on DVD's. I've only had 1 drive go bad on me so far (Plextor) and when it couldn't burn a simple cd, I ditched it.

I don’t know how to explain it other than:
The computer has the slight drumming sound like it is constantly accessing the hard drive. Normally the task manager only fluctuates slightly as programs are accessed but in my problem like I said it fluctuates up to 60% constantly. I cannot stop it and have to shut down the computer.
I use Ad-Aware and AVG weekly.
