I'm using Music Disc Creator in EMC9. The DVD-writer drive is an external USB2.

I've burned a few CDs successfully, but now I'm having trouble. When I try to burn a CD-R I get a message:

Buffer under run - Medium Error

During that same burn, MDC creates the .C2D image correctly, but not the actual disc. Later I am able to burn a disc from the C2D file successfully using the disc copier feature.

The music content is only 470MB, so I don't think it's a size problem.

What does this error mean?

Buffer under-run means the data stream isn't going fast enough for the drive and it has to stop and wait for more data

Defrag your hard drive (usual culprit) and also check that the drives are set to UDMA (faster transfer rate)

Also, try to shut down any background apps while the burn is going and also do a spyware sweep to make sure nothjing is running that shouldn't be
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Thanks, Gi70my. I'll do hte defrag and spyware check and shut down unnecessary programs.

Is there an easy way to close all unneeded programs? I need USB, so I can't run in safe-mode, can I?

Is it possible to set UDMA on a USB2 drive? I can see where to set it with the ATA/IDE drives in the device manager, but that wouldn't help with this USB drive, would it?

USB2 should be fine - to shut down messengers and so on - give it the three-finger salute laugh.gif (ctrl-alt-del) then shut down from the task manager

Actually many have found that it is more reliable to create the image file (c2d in your case) first without burning the CD at the same time. You can then use DiscCopier to burn the image file to the CD. The amount of time required is not much longer then doing a burn directly.

To follow up, I've found that the errors have stopped once that I cleaned out the Temp file. I didn't realize there was a huge one in C:\WINDOWS\Temp in Win XP Pro. I had simply been checking another Temp file in C:\temp.

But copying the C2D file is probably the safest, and that worked right away without deleting the Temp files.

Thanks a million for your responses!

To remove the C:\Windows\Temp, simply go to control panel, system, click on the 'Advanced' Tab and then 'Environment Variables' Change that read C:\Temp for both .tmp and .temp files and then you can delete the one in C:\Windows

Thanks for the idea, Gi7omy. It doesn't hur to remove the temp file from the system?

I also found another Temp folder here:
C:\Documents and Settings\MY_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Temp

Bummer, tonight when I tried to burn a CD with MDC, I ended up with a coaster and this error message:
"Cannot format medium. Incompatible medium - Illegal Request."

Before starting the burn I had had my computer on for hours, but I closed out all other programs and even a few others (in the task manager). The burn got as far as writing the table of contents and then threw that error.

I'm using HP Lightscribe CD-R 52x disks in a Samsung Super-writemaster SE-S184 DVD+-R drive. Previously I've been able to burn others of the same disc.

What do you think is wrong?

A bad disc or even a bad batch isn't unheard of - did you try it with another disc?
