PROBLEM: I have tried using both the MyDVD Basic 9v and My DVD Express to create a VCD but each time it crashes. In MyDVD Basic it crashes whenever i try to add chapters, though you can alway get a few in before it does. In both they crash every single time i'm ready to burn and hit the burn disc icon. At that point the Burn Project Window will open however then everything crashes. I have recieved a few different error messages every time i try this.
btw, i've have tried to use this program with both .avi and .wmv but it is the same for all. There is also the one less important issue of being able to import certain .avi movies that have the Red cross thing in the tile but i need to be able to burn regular files first.
ERROR MESSAGES: the error messages have pretty much been the typical prog. not responding will find solution blah blah blah.
RoxWizardLauncher Module has stopped working
Visual C++ Library has requested to terminate in an unusual way
Videowave 9 has stopped working program will close.
they aren't word for word but thats the gist of them. (there are no error or runtime numbers to refer to)
from what i've read most suggestions are to update the direct x and graph drivers.
I wouldn't think that i need to update my graphic drivers being that i bought my computer a few months ago.
I've tried to go from directx 10 to directx 9.0c but when i've gone throught the end runtime set up thingy from i believe microsoft it says "failed to install please try agian later or check your network connection" or something along those lines.
I've also read somethings about IE7 and WMP 11, but i'm pretty sure they both came with my computer.
I am generally pretty good when it comes to solving problems with my computer but i just can't get this one. It's especialloy annoying when the error messages don't seem to give any rhyme or reason for the crash.
If you could help many in any way that would be awesome. Whether there's programs that might conflict with it or someting else. I don't know why it wouldn't work properly considering it came preinstalled.

Since you are runing Vista as your OS, some suggestions you've read don't apply, like IE 7 and WMP 11, as they are the base versions for those and can't be rolled back. I believe Directx10 is also the version that comes with Vista, did it not? If so, leave that one at that version, just update it if there are any for it.
As to your video card, of course you should update the drivers for it. Card makers are constantly working on updated drivers, especially for Vista since it does not work the same as XP did.
This Topic is also being moved to the EMC 9 vista section, so hopefully someone with vista will see it and be able to offer some suggestions.

I feel like a complete idiot but i believe i solved that problem.
It turns out that the cd i was using (CD-r) had already been used for an attempted burn. I guess i simply assumed that the program would let me know if it was a bad disc not just crash. Now i am not 100% sure that all the problems were solved i will have to test it out more fully. I was, however, able to get to the burning process using MyDVD express to write a VCD. There was however a problem with this. I actually have a code for it though. It said "error 80004005 while creating VCD". I will do further research into this problem but if you know what is wrong there and how i can remedy it that would be great great great. So far ive come up with stuff about updating my video driver but that still leads me to wonder that if they both came preinstalled shouldn't they be updated enough to work together?

It turns out that that vcd i made works with my dvd player. The only problem is that the menu won't work. It comes up but thats it u can't press play or anything. When i pressed the menu button on my remote it turned off the menu and just started playing it. So my guess is that that error affects the menu in some way. I also had a random question concerning MyDVD Basic v9 it didn't seem able to burn VCD or at least it said please insert valid disc or something like that. And when i import a video of about 120mb it says 765mb used. Im thinking that that is simply because it is trying to put it into a dvd format however i can't seem to find a way to say i want it in VCD format. In the MyDVD Express it at least had the drop down of DVD, VCD, or SVCD. Any solutions?

Just to be clear up front, I am not running Vista, so it's possible that has something to do with the 8000 error you are getting, but I don't think so.As to the video drivers and software being up to date and compatible, that's all going to depend on where you got the pc and what they did before selling it to you. The video drivers are most likely to be out of date, as they were probably only as current as what was available at the time the pc was "staged" with all the software, etc. It's not going to hurt to update them, as there are likely to be newer ones that are more compatible with Vista and probably fix some types of bugs.
A couple things that have helped with burning/encoding errors, is to open MyDVD for the Start -> Programs -> ..... way (or it's equivalent in Vista) rather than thru the Roxio Home menu. Also, you could try burning to an image file instead of direct to disc, then use the Disc Copier program to burn to the disc. Separating the encoding from the burning can sometimes help. also, it's easier to make additional copies, as the encoding is already done in the image file. You just burn the disc using the image file.
When a VCD is played in a set top player, the menu doesn't function the way a DVD will. You don;t navigate to an item to highlight then press enter. On a VCD, you press the number of the movie to start it. So if you have 3 movies, you press the 1 to start the first one, 2 for the second, or 3 for the first.
The size of your source files is actually not what matters. It's the length in time that counts, as it will get converted to meet the specs for the type of project you are making if it isn't already. Typically (if memory serves serves right) a VCD will hold up to approx 60 mins of video, depending on the settings. At least the ones I've made with some of the older versions did.
One last thing, I think you have to select the type of project in MyDVD that you want to make before you save it or make changes to it. Once started, I don;t think you can change it.
Hope some of that helps

Yea thanks a lot! That information was really useful. So yes Using Express actually did create the VCD all the way and it worked fine.
After fixing that all up it still does crash plenty of times when i try creating chapters using MyDVD Basic. I am normally able to create at least 2 or 3 chapters before it either freezes or comes up with the Videowave 9 not responding window. I've gotten through this so far by creating one chapter at a time and saving it. It takes longer that way but ill will try updating my video drivers and see what that does.
