1st post on here so please bear with me. Installed EMC 9 download from Roxio website. At first I was stuck on the 0% encription in My DVD 9 but thanks to reading some of your posts I updated my video driver and DirectX and got past that so thanks alot. But now when I click to burn in MyDVD 9 it starts encoding and almost immediately the Visual C++ pops up in the task bar and I get a spinning hourglass in place of the curser. No error box or anything except the tab in the taskbar. And it continues to encode and burn the dvd and I can continue using the computer after the burn except I still have the spinning hourglass for a curser until I reboot. If I click on the Visual C++ tab it just goes away but not the hourglass! I went to the Microsoft website and installed Visual C++ but didn't help. I can burn image to hard drive and then burn that to disk with no problem. Sorry this is kinda long but I don't know what all to tell you for someone to help me.
Thanks,
rudy64

run msconfig (in start, run) and disable RoxWatchTray9,exe at start up (it's a bit of a resource hog anyway) and see if that helps

You may have problems with the graphics tho - in generel the 'LE' cards aren't really up to the job and you could end up having to use software rendering
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I'd read that in another post and already disabled Roxwatch. Also don't know if there's a connection, but when the Visual C++ tab pops up and I get the hourglass, the "firewall is turned off" baloon pops up for a few seconds then goes away, even though the firewall is on.Thanks for the reply. I'll try the software rendering.

Something that has been reported elsewhere: if you don't use (or intend to use) Drag to Disc, go to add/remove programs and uninstall it and then go to the EMC9 section there and try a repair install.

Personally, I never use D2D myself (in common with all other packet writing s/w it's about as reliable as an igloo on the equator for backup purposes)

I'd read that somewhere also and had already canned D2D. I tried the software rendering and had same result only without the C++ tab showing up, just the hourglass and firewall baloon. BTW, I also have Nero 6 and Sonic Digital Media plus v7. I don't want to get rid of them if I don't have to, as they have always been reliable and troublefree. Just wanted something with more capabilities.

Does the C++ error contain the term mediahub by chance?

I don't get an actual error code or box or anything like that. Just a tab in the taskbar that says Visuall C++ and the spinning hourglass.

Hmmmm, ok. I was just wondering since you mention Sonic Digital Media, which I think is one of the apps this KB article refers to for C++ and Mediahub errors. Thought maybe something in there might possibly apply.

Do you have Nero InCD installed as well? If so, try uninstalling it (it's the same as D2D really)

No, I ditched it a long time ago. Thanks for the ideas, though.

Hey guys, once the server came up and I was able to follow the KB link in Larry's post, I disabled all startup apps in msconfig and tried again and everything was smooth sailing right to the end with no problems. So where do I go from here? How do I determine which app is the culprit since there's a pretty long list of things running in there? Thanks for any suggestions.

Turn them back on one at a time or in small groups and test in between.
If you have a lot of them, you might also take the opportunity to consider whether you really need all those startup items.

Some apps set some component to start up on boot, with an option to disable within the app; use that where appropriate.

If you do not recognise what a startup item relates to, you can look here:

http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html

they also give advice on whether an item is needed

Thanks for the advice and the link. I didn't think all those should be running but didn't know how to determine what stays and what goes. You all are great on this site. Keep up the awesome help you give to us "newbies"! biggrin.gif
