I am not a mp3 expert - however:
I believe the playlist you created determines the play order of your mp3 tracks - not how you see them listed in the burn list.

To do anything more "random" than that is the job of the player - I can set my CD player to choose "random" or "Repeat all" or "Standard", etc. But I admit it's an old player, it works for me and doesn't pretend to be a TV set

In that case, it's entirely possible that your player is not using the playlist, not all do. If you look at the files on your CD using Windows Explorer, you should see the playlist (.M3U) file among the .MP3 files. Open that up using Notepad or Wordpad (it's just a text file) and if you see the "randomized" list of songs there, then the playlist file was created correctly, and your player is simply not using the playlist file, and is instead playing the files as they show up on the disc, which, by default, will be alphabetically. Not much you can do about that except get a different player, or, if you want the exercise, select the group of .MP3 files, and prefix their name with a three digit numeric string (001, 002, 003, 010, 223, etc.) to put them in the order you want.
Hope that helps.

Okay... you'd better start at the beginning. This thread is about .MP3 discs. (Data discs full of .MP3 files.) If you're talking about merging tracks, then you're talking about an Audio CD.
So, I would strongly suggest that you start a new thread, and give us exactly the details of what type of disc you're trying to create, and what doesn't seem to be working for you.

Sorry for the misapplication of "tracks". I am creating an .MP3 disk from files on my hard drive. I used to do this with version 5.x. This function appears to be the same in 7.5 as in 5.x. The instructions tell me to do what I was doing already but it puts everything back in it's own order. Thanks to one of the replies to the Hooie's original request I worked around the problem by renaming the files to include the order number in the beginning of the name. I worked around the merge problem by using the Sound Editor and pasting the files I wanted to merge together there - it works but that is clumsy compared to selecting files and clicking on 'merge', again in accordance with the instructions.

I'm hoping this means you're getting what you want. From everything you've said here, it still sounds like you're creating an Audio CD, not an MP3 CD, even if your source files are .MP3 files.

Put your CD in the drive, and open Windows Explorer (or MyComputer), and click on the drive - what kind of files do you have? Are they .cda, or are they .mp3 with an .m3u?
