I created a DVD for a friend of mine in Videowave. I did what I normally do and outputted it as DVD best quality MPEG-2 to play on DVD players and then burned it using MyDVD without menus. I used a DVD+R blank disc. Anyway, when I played it back on my computer and even my own DVD player, it looked fine. I sent it out to her and she was able to watch it up to a certain point and the DVD started tiling, breaking up, and losing sound. She fast-forwarded it and it went back to the beginning very quickly and did the same thing in the same part of the DVD when she tried it again. I burned her another DVD thinking it was the burn and the EXACT same thing happened in the EXACT same spot as the first DVD. (I also used the same brand DVD with the 2nd burn). Why is this happening on her machine and not mine?? I thought maybe she needed to clean it but she played a commercial DVD in the same player and it played fine. She has played DVDs that I have made before without any problems (same brand DVDs as well). She even tried playing one of my other DVDs from a while back that played perfectly back then, and it broke up and tiled yesterday for her. I thought it was the machine but if commercial DVDs are playing, then what could be the problem. Is this a DVD+R vs. DVD-R problem?? Any help in sorting this out would be helpful!! I just can't understand why it plays fine sometimes and other times it is messed up. Thanks!!

Try doing it with different media - her player probably doesn't like the brand you're using

This is very common (DVD players can be very picky over what they will or won't handle) and the fact that the discs work on your machine would point in the direction of them being incompatible on hers

My sister in law's high-end Sony won't play some discs but my own by A.Non of Taiwan is happy playing exactly trhe same disc
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

That makes sense to me, however, why would that brand work on her machine in the past and not now??It is being finicky!! Could it just not work one time and then work another?? I burned her a new one using Verbatim DVD-R. I haven't had any complaints with this brand yet, so hopefully this will work!! Thanks!

Even though it may be the same brand, different batches of that brand can do that too. One of those mysteries of the universe really

Thanks. Does anyone know of a brand and type of DVD that is consistent in ALL machines?? This can be really annoying after a while!!

I've always been a Fuji fan, but make sure the package says MADE IN JAPAN on the label. From all the forums I've read, just about any brand 'Made in Japan' are very high quality. Taiyo Yuden being on top for many years. Even at that as Daithi pointed out, there can still be flaws in the manufacturing. I also wouldn't burn any faster than 4x or maybe 8x.

Fujifilm oem's media and puts there name on it!
Only media I know Made In Japan 'MIJ' is Taiyo Yuden.
I have seen Fuji DVD's under three different manufactures in as many years.

1. Fujifilm DVD+R YUDEN000T02 8x
2. Fujifilm DVD-R RITEKF1 16x
3. Fujifilm DVD+R PRODISC R05 (001) 16x

If you can find Fuji DVD's and the "package says MADE IN JAPAN on the label" buy them they are probably Taiyo Yuden.

Remember the name Fuji means nothing. It's the MID, media ID that says it all. How do you tell that? Place the disc in a DVDInfo tool like, DVDInfo Pro, DVD Identifier, and CDDVDSpeed.

The first site wil give you a good explanation of how DVDs and CDs are made and what to look for from an el cheapo to a decent one that very well may last a hundred years, if stored properly, otherwise you may be only looking at 6 months and then it will start to ROT.

This site talks about what DVD media is good and bad and how to watch out for FAKE media. Very interesting as well.

This site actually names a few examples of Cds and DVDs and gives some good advice as well.

-R's are more compatible then +R's with set top boxes.

If you have the same problem in the exact same spot of the DVD, I do not believe it is the media anyway.

Barryware - try reading the original problem completely

"when I played it back on my computer and even my own DVD player, it looked fine. I sent it out to her and she was able to watch it up to a certain point and the DVD started tiling, breaking up, and losing sound."

A fault in the burn process would be on all playbacks - not just one machine

Thank you all so much! I have just learned way more than I ever wanted to know about DVDs!! The ones that didn't work with her machine were TDKs DVD+R (although this brand has worked in the past for her). I typically use Verbatim so I tried burning it with a Verbatim DVD-R. Hopefully she will have success with this brand. I enjoyed the second article you sent me, Wingwiper. I am still a little confused as to how to find out the Media ID code on blank DVDs. I will experiment with it on the computer, but it looks like Verbatim is a good brand according to the listing. Thanks again for all of your help everyone!! You all are truly the BEST!!

If you have the same problem in the exact same spot of the DVD, I do not believe it is the media anyway.

That's the typical wisdom in the U.S., but apparently +R discs are more compatible in Europe. However, my relatively new Sony combo DVD-RW/VCR unit seems to prefer +R discs over -R discs.

Dunno where you heard that one Dave - I've been using -R ever since I got my first RW drive (and that was -R) and I never had a problem playing anything I rendered
