While recording books on tape (cassettes) to my hard drive the recording randomly stops then starts leaving out 5 to 10 seconds of the tape. This phenomenon can be seen by watching the Left and Right volume intensity bars. Their movement stops during these lapses. These occur at the beginning of the recording and periodically throughout. I know the cassette is OK and I'm using a relatively new JVC tape deck. The cables are OK

What is going on ?

Maybe you computer is just trying to catch up! rolleyes.gif

Seriously, shut down your anti-virus while you are recording because it may be doing a virus scan on what you are recording. This could cause the random gaps.

Also make sure that your computer is free of malware and viruses and that the hard drive has plenty of free space and is defragged.

Don't play games or read mail while recording. Since you didn't post your computer specs, I'm going to guess that it is near the low end of the requirements -- perhaps an older laptop?

Also make sure that you update the drivers for your audio device.

Thanks for the quick response. smile.gif Here is what i'm using:
Dell Dimension E521, Athion 64 3200+ (2.00GHz, 512K) Unit Purchased 11/06
512MB DDR@ SDRAM@ 533MHz
80GB SATA ll HD (7200RPM)
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Sound card is SigmaTel Audio (probably integrated?)

I have noticed that there is no skipping (noted by the L & R volume indicaters) when in the stop record mode. When the record button in activated skipping begins after about 1 minute of recording. This skipping is, more definitively, a stoppage. As you said the recording probably stops to let somethine else catch up.

I shut down the Norton anti Virus. This did not help. glare.gif
Do I need a better sound card? Should I talk to Dell?
The HD was defraged and the system cleaned of unnessary files. No Help

Almost sounds like you have track detection enabled. If silence is detected, a track marker will be inserted. Normally, the silence is set to more than one second. When the music is played back, there will be a pause. Open Sound Editor and look at the display, do you see the track markers? Can you see the gaps if you expand the time frame?
