I have a Philips Double Layer DVD +R 8.5GB 240min. 8x discs with a code of: "CPDR85F-CDEWIPFOA-105 4116" on the ring before the dye layer on the back of the disc.

I have a LG GSA-H50N DVD Super Multi 18X DVD +R burner that claims it does 10X DVD +R DL.  It has 1.01 firmware on it which was installed hoping that Roxio would burn the 8x discs at 8x instead of 4x, and it is running on DMA mode (checked all my IDE channels in the device manager).

Roxio Creator Classic is creator 9, and I tried to update it manually, but it said that there weren't any updates.

Any ideas where the problem exists?

It's possible your drive firmware isn't recognising the media as x8 capable. Have you checked for a firmware update?

In the meantime, from the start menu, go to Tools, DVD INfo and run that with a blank disc in the drive and in 'media' you should see something like this:

Book Type                                                           DVD-R
Media Type                                                          DVD-R
Manufacturer Rated Speed                                  8.0x  11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor                           CLV  8.0x  11080KBps
Available Write Descriptor                           CLV  6.0x   8310KBps
Available Write Descriptor                           CLV  4.0x   5540KBps
Available Write Descriptor                           CLV  2.0x   2770KBps
Write Strategy Speed                                        4.0x 5540KBps
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Yes, the original firmware was 1.00, the most recent update (and only update) is to 1.01 which I am now running.
When I run DVD Info Pro and go to the Info Tab, this is what I see:

                            Media Information
Region information                                    N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID                                    CMC MAG D04
Media Product Revision Number                                         00h
Format Capacity                                                Blank Disc
Free Blocks                                                    4253024256
Free Capacity                                              7.96GB(8.55GB)
Book Type                                                        DVD+R DL
Media Type                                                       DVD+R DL
Manufacturer Rated Speed                                          Unknown
Available Write Descriptor                           CLV  4.0x   5540KBps
Data area starting sector                                          30000h
Layer 0 end sector                                                22D7FFh
Linear Density                                                0.293um/bit
Track Density                                                0.74um/track
Number of Layers                                                        2
Layer Track Path direction                      (OTP) Opposite track path

                           Complete Media Code

00000030 09 08 12 13 01 01 01 20 00 18 16 09 08 12 13 01 ....... ........

So, yes it would appear as though either the drive is not recognizing the 8x DVD DL, or the software isn't....I will try a different software and see what happens.
Or maybe it's a combination of a cheap DVD drive and cheap DVD DL's? Maybe it's time to suck it up and buy the Plextor...

It's the drive that recognises the media from a small info track on it - and it tells the software what the burn speed max will be

If your drive can't recognise an 8x disc, then it will all default to a lower value
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

CMC Mag is junk media.  Try a different brand, and not Memorex.  Try Verbatim.

Maybe it's a combo of junk media and junk LG burner...the burner was $40 brand new!...maybe there's a reason that the plextor is $140?

I suppose for that matter, there's a reason that most 25pk's of 8x dvd dl discs are $80 and I paid $30...

Plextor quit making drives a few years ago so you might end up paying $140 for a re-bagged LG burner…

Roxio is one of the few software's that report actual burning speed. Most of will let you select a high speed and let you think it is burning at that speed.

Like GPB, Verbatim is number one in my book!

The LG may be okay.  Plextor is good, but they quit making burners 1 year ago.  My Plextor 716A died after a year, and I was lucky enough to get a couple of good BenQ burners, before they quit manufacturing burners.

Liteons would be my choice of burners, if I had to get a new one now.
