When I burn a DVD on my Dell Dimension desktop using a HP DVD writer, sometimes the DVD's I create cannot be read on other computers? Why? Even my original six year old DVD player that came with the Dell can't read some of the DVD's created. How do I create DVD's for all to see?

You didn't say what it is you're doing, but presuming it's video, try a different brand of media. It is possible to get a batch that just won't play in a player.
Again, please supply a bit more detail - what you are doing, what program you are using and how you are doing it

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

One bit of information at a time. This is going to take a long time…
What program? – there are 35 included with the Suite.
What Settings?
What media?

I am only using the classic creator for DVD Data disks. I use regular DVD +R/RW
I sometimes use explorer and simply copy to the DVD. These DVD are not read on my HP computers or my work computers. I simply want to make regular back up of my data.

Make sure that when you do the burn that the box labeled "Read-Only Disc" is checked. This closes the disc. What you may be running into is having trouble reading discs that haven't been finalized.
You could try putting one of the discs that can't be read into your drive, opening EMC,Tools,Disc and Device Utility and see if the Finalize button lights up.If it does try finalizing the disc and then see if it works.

First DVD RW media is not universally readable in DVD-ROM drives! Older drives, about 2000/01 were made before there was such a thing as DVD RW media. Even some made after the media hit the market still could not read RW media.
You indicate you are using 2 different programs, whether you realize this or not. I would guess if you use Classic as Terry indicated, you will not have any trouble.
You said you use "explorer" sometimes. This is not possible in that XP cannot write to any DVD!
What is probably happening at that point is that Drag to Disc, a packet writer, is intercepting the copy call and formats the disc for D2D use. Compatibility with D2D is a little on the iffy side… Packet writing is the least reliable form of burning ever devised and you would be better served by removing it from your PC through the Add/Remove Programs!
D2D acts like a big floppy and folks love its' simplicity because they don't have to learn how to use burning software. They love it until the day, all data on the disc is unreadable!

Well it is working, I droped my write speed and did click off read only and that has solved the issue. Thanks so much
