When recording via microphone in on a Vista Ultimate laptop machine, I cannot enable sound while recording. Under XP I could hear the input and hence new whether the sound was being received correctly.

Actually my problem is larger than first thought. On this laptop I am only able Capture from a Microphone (Conexant High Definition) and there is no option for Input and when I connect the output Audio Jack of the Tape player to the Microphone Jack, I get a lot of static noise and very little music.

Have you checked with the makers of the sound chipset whether they have new Vista drivers?

The fact that it worked under XP and isn't with Vista would tend to suggest that there is a driver problem there

I have been to the HP site and have all of the latest drivers and the sound card works okay except in this situation
