I have a bunch of family movies on single layer DVDs that I would like to burn to dual layer DVDs. Original disk were burned using a Sony deck type DVD burner.

I tried opening up Video Wave and Media Manager to copy the DVDs to my HD so that I could edit and then burn them to a new dual layer disk, but it doesn't work.

There is one folder on the DVD called Video_TS. It has a bunch of files called .ifo, .vob and .bup.. When I open Video Wave and cick on Add Content it opens a window called Insert Videos which shows the files but they just have movie reel logos. No preview. If I highlight one and click preview it just shows the movie reel logo but does nothing.

Any ideas?

Copy the DVD's to your hard drive, then open Disc Copier, and use the Video Compilation tab to bring in more than one of the DVD's, to burn to a dual layer DVD.

In the video compilation module it doesn't allow me to preview either.

You mean just copy the entire contents of the DVD to a folder on my HD and then use disc copier to burn it? Without previewing?

That might work but how would I edit it? This still would not fix that problem.

If you want to edit it, copy the files to the hard drive, then add them, using Media Selector, in VideoWave. VideoWave should accept the .VOB files. If not, change the extension from .VOB to .MPG, and try again.

Open disc copier on the source side navigate to ( video compilation, add movies ) the DVD drive with your home burned DVD. On the Destination side, check the box output to, file/folder box. Then click the save as button at top and save to a folder of your choice.

I tried that many many times. There is nothing there. It shows my drive and it shows a folder called video_ts but it does not show any of the files in that folder on the DVD.

Doing as you suggest brings up a window called Media Selector. On the left pane of the window it shows my DVD drive and the name of the DVD; Sonata_Volume. Under that it shows a folder called video_ts. WHen I highlight that folder in the left pane the right pane show nothing. Empty. Nada.

Could this be a codec issue?

Does highlighting the video_ts folder in MEDIA SELECTOR (after clicking add movies) show a movie on the right side of MEDIA SELECTOR? Highlight that and click OK at the bottom of media selector (are you seeing that?) , it's now loaded on the left, under source!

He/she already has it in the right mode, if copied to the hard drive, as is.

Then one, or more of the files, on the DVD are corrupt indicating a bad burn or bad media.

No. If I highlight that folder on the left side it shows nothing on the right side.

The disk is not corrupt. I can watch it on my DVD player with no problems. I watch in on my PC using WMP with no problems.

When I try to just drag it over to my HD using Windows Explorer it begins but then just hangs. But I don't think that has anything to do with this. EMC9 should be showing me a video file in that window you guys decribe but it isn't.

I don't think that it is loading the proper codec. Or any codec for that matter.

The codec has nothing at all to do with being able to copy it from the DVD to your hard drive. If you can't do that, then something is wrong with the files.

What message did you get when you tried to copy it from your DVD, to your hard drive?

No message. It just starts copying and then just hangs. I think it is just because it is 4.4 GB of data I an trying to copy because I just copied only 1 500MB file and it copied to my HD fine.

I am starting to think that these DVDs are copy protected. Is that possible? On home movies? How can I tell? Would this kind of behavior be the same if I were trying to do the same thing that I am trying to do but with a movie DVD? Like a store bought copy protected DVD? Would that cause the same kind of blank windows and inability to view the files?

Because if that is the same kind of behavior then it could be that my Sony DVD burner console deck is copy protecting my home movies when I burn them from tape to DVD using that deck.

It may seem a strange question - but is your hard drive formatted to NTFS or FAT32?

NTFS or FAT32 should not matter since none of the files on the DVD are greater then 1GB.

In Windows Explorer, double-click on the Video_TS folder on the DVD. You should see a list of files with extensions ifo, bup and vob. Can you you copy the files one at a time to your hard drive?

my Sony DVD burner console deck

Some setting on the Sony deck could be causing this. Have you read the manual? Is the Sony deck making a compliant DVD Video disc? Are you using a RW disc to record on in DVD-VR mode? Or are you using DVD-R +R disc's and are the disc's closed?

Place a Sony deck burned disc in DVDInfo Pro, media information. Does it show the disc under format type, UDF 1.02? And does it list it as a DVD Video?

myguggi,
Yes, I can copy them to my HD one at a time. I still can't preview them that way though. However, for kicks I renamed one .vob file to .mpeg and I then could see it in the list.

cdanteek,
I don't think I have DVDInfo Pro but I used the "Disc and Device Utility" and here is some of the info it showed if that helps.
DVD-R video DVD format
DVD book type - DVD-R
content type - ROM/Audio
file system - UDF
copy protection system type - No Copyright Protection

I'm still having problems. I submitted a support ticket to tech support on the 7th and I still have not gotten a reply from them.

I still have no idea why EMC9 will not preview/view .vob files. I purchased this product so that I can have an "all-in-one" solution and if I have to use third party software to decode and copy my discs to my HD first then use EMC9 to burn then why did I buy this expensive "all-in-one" product?

There must be a way to do this from within the program. I can't be the only person that wants to rip content from a home made DVD and burn it to a different DVD. Assuming that others do it successfully then what is different with my set up? What is not properly installed or what am I doing wrong/different?

myguggi,
Yes, I can copy them to my HD one at a time.

Once you have copied the vob files to your hard drive, can you play them with Windows Media Player? If no then there is propably something wrong with the files. Can you play the renamed files with WMP?

When I copy the files to my HD I cannot play with WMP if I leave them named .vob. If I rename them to .mpeg then yes, I can play them with WMP fine with no problems.

If I missed it, what OS and WMP version are you running. When you copy the files to your HD how are you trying to play/open the vob file with WMP, be specific with the details? How are you, play/open the re-named mpg file in WMP?

Try adding the vob by selecting it in videowave, add photo/video. Does videowave add it to the production and does the green play button light up?
