I have an Aiptek MPVR camcorder that i am trying to edit a video from. The default medium that it records in is ASF, and i thought i could export using QT Pro. After doing some searching, it appears that QT Pro does not support ASF, and that i need ANOTHER utility to do this (which is disappointing).

The complete flow of what i'm trying to accopmlish is as follows:

1. Import ASF files from MPVR camcorder to Windows XP or Vista machine
2. Convert ASF files to the best format (recommendations welcome) for editing using Adobe Premier Elements 3 or EMC 9
3. Edit ?? format files using PE 3 or EMC 9 for DVD creation not web viewing

So my question is, will EMC 9 support importing ASF files, and then converting them to something that i can edit them in?

Any / all comments welcome

Thnx

In EMC 9, VideoWave will accept .ASF files.

bruce,

2 questions for you.

1. importing the native asf file from camcorder doesn't work, you sure about that?

2. will it convert them at 8 MBPS for high quality viewing?

I have no experience at all, with .ASF files.  All I did was open VideoWave, clicked Add Photo/Video, and looked at what file types could be added.  .ASF was one of them.

If the .asf file is on your computer, and VideoWave does not accept it, I don't know what to suggest.  You could try changing the file extension to .mpg, but I doubt that that would work.

Let us know what you find out.  I was hoping that someone else, who had experience with .asf files, would stop in and offer a possible solution.

Well, I don't work with .asf files either, but I did find one on my pc. It's in the \Program Files\Movie Maker foler as sample.asf (a sample file that comes with Microsoft Movie Maker apparently). I was able to add it to VideoWave with no problem. You might want to compare the copy of it on your pc to the ones from your camera to see what's different.

I don't have that sample in the Movie Maker folder, but I did find one that my son sent me, some time ago.  VideoWave would not let me add it to the Production Editor. sad.gif

according to tech support they don't "support" asf conversion, and the clip is defective. I find this interesting as they advertise ASF conversion on the product spec page.

Strange - where did you see it said that .asf was supported?

I can't see anything about it here (product features)

Well, according to Wikipedia, .asf is " Microsoft's proprietary digital audio/digital video container format". So it could be that the actual type of video your camera is encoding into the .asf wrapper is something that you don't have the codecs on your system for. You could try GSpot to see if it can determine what codecs you need, if it will open the .asf files.
