No Sound in preview of video or slideshows

Guys, I guess I am on to the next problem. I am trying to use MyDVD, VideoWave, and/or Slideshow Assistant to build my first DVD. The problem I am running into is that I get no sound from the previews.
If I open up the video in VideoWave, I can turn on the "Native" track and it shows a yellow waveform, but if I run the Preview I hear nothing. I can add a Music track and still get nothing (with both wma and mp3). At one point I added a Sfx track with a mp3 and I got audio for the first preview, but then it went silent (I muted it then un-muted it and it was gone). I used a .wmv movie and tried to preview the native sound it and it worked once but then I tried a second time--no audio.
A similar issue exists if I add a video file to the MyDVD production... no audio to accompany the video. This is when I use a mpg video that I captured. If I play the same file in Windows Media Player, it works with sound just as you would expect.
If I run the Slideshow Assistant, add pictures and background audio, when I run a preview I get the bonus effect of no sound and no pictures. I can preview the sound just prior to adding it (clicking on the play button works) but it does not show up during preview. I have tried mp3 and wma files to no avail. (Why won't pictures show up even if I don't add sound?)
All of the Volume Envelopes are set to the middle of the band. I have my PC sound mixer set to provide 50% for all sources (and I made no changes to any other app between when I did get audio and when I didn't).
Do I have some sort of problem with mpeg codecs? What's going on?
System: Dell 410, Core2 1.86GHz, 2GB, SB Audigy MB, WinXP MCE
All drivers are up-to-date along with the OS.

Don't run slide show Assistant from MyDVD; use Video Wave or at least run the slide show Assistant under the photos tab. That one is three steps and you can do the final editing in VideoWave.
I'll have to think about the audio but just in case. The program will not accept any music files that were purchased from an on line store like iTunes. They are protected and you must follow the rights agreement from the on line store. You must use music that comes from a CD, LP or Cassette. Does any or all of your music come from an on line store?
For the music that doesn't. put it into Sound Editor and then export it as a wav file. They using that music in your production.
For your video files in Video Wave, what do you see when you click on the speaker icon just below the preview window. Make sure that the audio is not muted and that the volume is higher than "0". Try moving it up. Same thing in MYDVD just above the preview window.
Also clear your proxy files by going to the top menu and selecting tools, options and then clear.
Any luck with any of this?

Thanks for your reply. Let me try to answer your questions, then I have some good news (kinda).
- None of my music is purchased, it all comes from original CDs.
- From the speaker icon I usually had 0db, I tried moving it up or down with no change in the result.
I cleared the proxy files and I started to get some results! The problem here is that the results were mixed. I was able to hear music or a video sound track, which is great compared to previously. The only problem is that in my short testing, I had to go clear the proxy files multiple times to get anthing to work when switching between applications.
Could you elaborate on what the proxy files are and why I may be encountering this as a repeating problem? Is there a more efficient method do deal with the clearing and (I presume) the recreation of proxy files?
Thank you.

Since clearing the proxy files seems to work at least somewhat, check where they are being created. Did you install the program to the default folder or to a different folder? Clearing the proxy files is something that might have to be done if you are doing a lot of editing and the computer or hard drive space is marginal.
Proxy files are simply used to staging the information in a project so that you can edit faster. They are rebuilt almost immediately after they are cleared. They are rebuilt with the information now in the project so there are no ghost carry overs. I have no idea why you seem to have to clear the proxy files often. Perhaps someone else can offer other suggestions.
Forgot to ask, Vista or XP? If Vista, perhaps there is somethng in the forum that will help. I use XP so I don't frequents that forum much.

Thanks again for checking up on this. I installed the proxy files in the default directory (that is, I did not make any changes to the directories durring installation). I do not suspect that it is a hard drive space issue, with a 500 GB RAID system and only 90GB used, I think I have plenty of room. And to answer your last quesiton on the OS, I am running Win XP MCE.

Did you try to use Sound Editor to convert the music files to wav? That's helped a lot of peole especially with mp3 files.
