Hello all,
Well, having trouble with Roxio again darnit. Home window works fine, click applications and they run according to windows task manager, but I can't do anything or the application disappears. For example if I double click on an existing videowave project, the window pops up then disappears. If I single click on Videowave from the tools menu on the home page it will open but will be an unusable grey screen, no preview pane or anything. When I check Windows task manager, it says videowave is running fine. Capture does similar things.
I have tried uninstall reinstall, rename media manager folder, register dao registry key. I had this problem before and was able to fix it so I thought by getting rid of some malware using windows live scan on microsoft.com. Well, the source of the problem is not apparent. I had recently installed Quickbooks pro and had uninstalled it, then uninstalled and reinstalled Roxio, did all the fixes listed above and Roxio magically started working after the live system scan from microsoft.
Last week I reinstalled Quickbooks (wife needs to work at home) and darn if Roxio stopped working again. I am starting to think quickbooks did something to windows that affected Roxio. So I thought, unistall and reinstall Windows xp service pack 2. Updated all the security fixes for xp, ran TrendMicro, Spybot, windows antispy. Still to no avail, roxio is dead at the moment.
I have some thoughts of the problem, perhaps Quickbooks changed something in Windows xp that conflicts with Roxio, maybe 512 MB of Ram is not enough because Quickbooks assigned too much to itself or something.
I really just am at a loss, I have heard that Intuit programs cause trouble on Windows machines and I had no trouble with Roxio until I installed Quickbooks. The bummer part is last time when I uninstalled Quickbooks, Roxio still didn't work. If you have read this far thank you and I look forward to any other ideas for fixes people might have before I shell out 35 bucks to call Roxio. Also, I need to leave Quickbooks on my computer for my wife. There is no apparent reason that quickbooks and Roxio can't co-exist.
Thanks

Di you try disabling it at startup to see if that makes a difference. otherwise there is a problem with both on your system. It's possible., like you said it changes something.

I don't know what your problem is but you've seem to have tried all the things I could suggest. I can tell you, I have no problems with Quickbooks Premier Pro (network version) running along side of EMC 7 or 8. I wouldn't put anything past QB's doing something without your permission. A great program but a PITA. They seem to think they can fill your computer with junk and for the most part, get away with some of it.

Jeff,
Man thank you for the fast reply! How do I disable Roxio at startup? The program doesn't do anything until I double click on the Roxio Icon. Not sure I understand....

Paul,
Good to know that you are able to run quickbooks alongside roxio. The version of Quickbooks I have is Quickbooks Premier - Accountant Edition 2005 just on my machine no network. Thanks for your fast reply... I will surely post my solution when I find it.

Jeff,
I went ahead and looked up online how to disable programs from startup. I tried run - msconfig/selected Startup Tab/ unchecked Quickbooks Update Agent/ restarted and tried Roxio, no effect. I could only find the Quickbooks Update Agent in the list. Is there another way to disable the program? Thanks

The Update Agent is just that, a program that checks in while you're online to see if there are updates to QB. You don't need if you're not using Payroll as you can check on your own for updates when you remember. Since Payroll changes sometimes quarterly, QB wants to check each time you log on.

This may be a shot in the dark, but it could be a corrupt media manager database. Try this:

Removing the existing Media Manager database so it can be rebuilt

a. Close all open applications, especially Roxio applications

b. Open 'my computer'

c. Double click on the 'C:' drive and browse to 'C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Roxio' where 'USERNAME' is the name of the user you are currently logged in as. (Note, this is a 'hidden' folder, so you may have to turn off the hide hidden files/folders in the Folder Options settings)

d. Right click on the 'MediaManager' folder and choose rename

e. Call the folder 'MediaManager.old'

f. Now try

Larry,
Thank you for the reply, I am open to any solutions. Unfortunately, this fix hasn't done anything to solve the problem. I am tempted to call Roxio tech and pay the 35 bucks, but I just feel like it may be a waste of money. Let me know if you know any other fixes.

I posted a question Feb. 18th 06 (Garygus). Our problem with EMC7 is a little different but I thought it might interest you to know I tried Ibissonette's suggestion on the MediaManager database and it worked for me. Goodluck! :)

Thank you for your thoughts on my problem. I have tried this solution, followed another solution that involved unregistering the dao360.dll file, restarting, then running Detect and Repair from MS Word Help, registering the dao360.dll file, then restarting. I uninstalled Roxio EMC 7.5, then I deleted any other roxio files, and reg keys then reinstalled Roxio. After all of that, VideoWave still didn't work.

Well, I decided to run MS AntiSpyware, Ad-aware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, PC Illin Spyware scan, and last but not least I ran Yahoo Antispyware Version 1.14 [06.01.06.17] and it found a Win32 Trojan. I removed it and whala, MAYBE that was the problem all along.

I guess the moral of the story was that I probably wasn't thorough enough in my scanning for malware. I am a newbie roxio user and I pretty much fix my own computer problems, but I am not an expert. It is so frustrating to have weird problems on your computer and trojans seem to really mess things up. Still can't figure out what the Trojan did to stop VideoWave and Capture from working. That may not have been the problem, but since I ran Yahoo Antispyware, VideoWave seems to be fine again. My wife and I THANK all of you for taking the time to help and I value all suggestions as they keep me inspired to not give up. I hope my system will stay stable this time.
