Roxio wont recognize blank media disks

I have a Dell laptop with a TSSTCorp DVD+-R TS-L632D ATA Device dvd wrtier and when I go to copy on to the media (the attempt was made with a DVD) it will not recognize the media I was using....It reads to put a recognizable media disk in and spits the one I have out....Memorex DVD-R. Do I have the wrong media or is there a configuration I am missing?
