I made a DVD of several mp3 files, and chose the "make compatible" option, before finishing the job. But still, when I gave the DVDs to a friend, she can't find any machine or DVD player that will recognize the files. Is there some free downoad, or something that will enable one to read files or disks made with Roxio data copy?

2) If not, I wonder what would be another option for making a DVD of mp3 files that Would Be compatible?

What application in the suite did you use to make the disc?If all you're trying to do is just write some mp3's to a dvd then try using Creator Classic and make sure when you burn to check the box for "Read only disc" in the General burning options.

Also keep in mind, most disc players that will play mp3s only play CD discs, they won;t play DVD discs. And for them to work on a DVD player, it has to be able to play mp3 dvd data discs. Older players especially aren't likely to be compatible with them.

don't think DVDs created with packet writing software (Drag to Disc, DLA, InCD etc) would work on any stand alone player...

You probably right and when I saw the 'Make compatible" I thought D2D as well but didn't want to jump to conclusions. That's why I asked what app was used to make the disc.Good thought though we'll have to see if the OP responds.
