I am new to this world of video manipulation - so please keep it simple - having just installed Creator 9 - any time I attempt to move or copy a video file my system freezes and after switching off and on (only action possible) I have a RAID error on one my RAID disks. Fundamental question - does this product work with RAID configured disks?

Yes.

I second the motion. There are no problems at least on my RAID rig moving files.

One might want to ask what raid are you using and if it is RAID 0 (zero or zero + 1) what is your stripe size. Video files are large so if your stripe size is too small, I would think that it could cause problems, but it is just a guess as I have no experience with the problem you are reporting.

You have to look at what your computer is used for... Word documents or powerpoint presentations, a smaller stripe size will boost performance.

However, video files are typically large so consider a bigger stripe size. That way, the drives are not too busy writing small clusters.

The rig I have dedicated to multimedia tasks I use a 256kb stripe. My main rig that does no video, I use a 128kb stripe as it does not process large files.

But.... If you already have your raid set up, you can not change it unless you start from scratch. When I was experimenting with stripe sizes, I made an image of my array (container) using PQ drive image. So when things went wrong, I could easily restore my image after changing the stripe size(s).

Hope this helps... I'm off to crash the server.

I have now carried out a large number of tests --- interesting to see if this is similar to anyone else's experience - my raid set up is RAID 0 --- to repeat the symptom - every time I access any video or picture file in any of the Roxio components (to load, move or save) my RAID array is corrupted and most times the machine freezes - requiring a power switch off, restart in safe mode and a fix of the RAID array using the Intel Matrix Storage Console - then another restart --- very tedious. But it happens time after time after time - not a single successful use of any Roxio feature.

The following is a "logical" deduction - not a technical deduction of what is going on - and how I have resolved this issue ----

I believe the basic issue is that the Roxio components cannot read certain types of files from a RAID 0 array - it simply cannot do the two reads and stick them together - but is very likely to handle any of the other RAID configurations where the data is not split.

The resolution - which lends support to this theory - is that I now put all the files I want to work with and resultant output onto a flash drive plugged into a usb port and hey-presto - everything works exactly as it should.

have you checked Microsoft's KB for RAID problems? This sounds more like an OS problem. Most Window's app don't access the hardware directly. You may not see this problem with other apps because the files are much smaller.

I'm using a TB RAID 0 array here and I've no problems at all. As Gary says, it's not down to EMC but likely something else again

Appreciate what you say --- but this problem has never occurred in a significant range of software applications used on my pc including some standard applications (word/excel) with very large files - 80MB+ --- until I started playing with video files (a la Roxio EMC) - Windows (wmp) is able to play back some still camera movie clips (very small sizes) that now bring down EMC.

PC is a Dell Dimension 9150 -- 1GB/originally XP Pro but since Jan 07 Vista Business/320 GB in Raid 0 array (2 x 160GB - 128 MB stripe) --- all ms windows updates have been applied.

Also appreciate the other post from a Raid 0 user reporting no problems --- but what else can I think --- problem only started and repeatedly occurred with the installation and use (every time) of EMC9 and disappears when files utilized by EMC are put on a flash drive and not split as per the Raid 0 array.

I would have no intention of facing the prospect of re-configuring the Raid array as this would involve the total rebuild of all applications and data.

Why, your OS and programs are on a Raid O strip array?

I have had no problems running a Raid 0 strip array on a Intel SATA Controller generation 1, on a ASUS MB, XP SP 2, using Roxio EMC 7.5, 8, and 9.

Hi Millas,

I just want to say that i have exactly the same problem as you. I have searched for a solution but cant find one.
Now im looking for another program.
I have Vista and MS burning program that comes with it works perfectly... so there must be something wrong with this Roxio thing.
Anyhow... if you find another solution, please give me a hint.

Best regards
Hannes

The workaround I have - using a flash drive in a usb port for all the video files I want to use - works fine and enables me to "enjoy" and use EMC 9 and facilitates the final burning of any DVDs..

Several gurus have reported RAID 0 as woking fine with EMC - but it may be in conjunction with XP - there may be a VISTA problem but thus far I have not found any references on a MS site - is there a site for VISTA problems? - or are there any happy RAID 0/VISTA/EMC users?

Regards,
Stewart

It's possible there are Vista problems - while my RAID array worked fine in XP 32, the same array didn't in XP 64. For some reason there was a driver problem - Windows claimed it couldn't install the drivers, but the RAID was visible and apparently working - until you tried to actually open a file and then it BSODed

However, new board here and the same set of 4 drives now work fine in both 32 and 64 bit XP

The original board used nForce 4 drivers (if that is relevant to your situation)

My Raid (0+1) works fine under MCE 9.0 except for all the problems with 9.0 (meaning... My raid as no effect one way or the other).

However... I have problems with the suite... The update will be available "soon" rolleyes.gif

If you need to speak with tech support, don't tell them you have a RAID or they'll immediately bail on your issue citing that they don't support their software on RAID.

It works on my raid system (SATA, Raid 1). At least it doesn't corrupt my RAID system or crash my computer.

My Palm Pilot software did mess up my RAID system when it carshed my system (XP Pro). I now have a SMART event, but it doesn't seem to mean anything. I've rebuilt my drives since.

I'm not happy with this product though and will be uninstalling it tonight. See post http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=26814
