Crashes on screen Split

I imported a "Family.dmsd" video file produced on my Sony DCR-DVD403 camcorder.  The video moved easily into the Production Editor and seemed to play without problems; but when I tried to SPLIT the scene (intending to delete some of it) the entire display locked up, going pale blue, and I got a “Stopped Working” popup.  

Before this, I had easily made/edited DVDs.  My first corrective action was to Control Panel>Uninstall the Roxio Suite and reinstall it using the original discs.  The exact problem repeated.  The only thing I can think is that I am using Windows Vista with auto updates configured.  Are you still Vista Compatible?  What else could be the problem?
