If you're using Vista I've discovered that the fix is to run the desired program (Sound Editor, Creator Classic, etc.) as Administrator: right-click on the shortcut on the Start Menu and choose "Run as administrator". This has fixed the "Trial version has expired" errors I was getting with EMC8 and also "Certificate missing" errors with EMC7.5. Should work also for EMC9. Apparently Roxio attempts to write registration information to what Vista considers protected areas in either the registry or file system, and running as Administrator allows it to happen.
I do not yet know if it's necessary to run as Administrator every time you use EMC or only the first time. I'll figure that out eventually, but I wanted to post this right away in case it can help someone who's tearing their hair in frustration, as I was.
Also, I did this after a fresh reinstall of EMC. I don't know if this fix will work otherwise.
Fix for "Certificate missing" errors on Vista

Are you stating you have gotten EMC 7.5 to run in Vista?
Vista includes IE 7, which causes EMC 7 and 7.5 to be unworkable. I would be extremely surprised if you ae actually running EMC 7.5 in Vista - and would like more details.

Correct, we haven't tested EMC 7.X in Vista. If you can get it to work, great, but we cant promise that it wont cause problems in that environment.

The only component I use from EMC7.5 is Label Creator. It works fine on Vista provided you run it as administrator. The only problem is that it generates a "Label Creator has stopped working" error when you exit the program. I tried setting the Compatibility Mode to XP but this error on exit persists.
And in case you're curious, the reason I've stuck with the old version of Label Creator is that it allows you to paste graphics directly into the label without having to save the graphic to a file. Saving to a file is a huge inconvenience as some of my labels can have 6 or more graphics, and I consider this loss of functionality a serious setback, a real "deprovement".
Anyone know if EMC9 restores the 7.5 behavior by allowing graphics to be pasted into a label?

The only EMC 7.5 module that won't work for me in Vista (so far) is DVD Builder. The rest seem fine.
You should actually try a version higher than 6 some time, Lynn. Then you wouldn't be extremely surprised.

I was hoping that you would say that all parts worked, but I figured DVD Builder would be a bust. For video work, Vista makes the suite useless.

I was hoping, too. However I guess the maxim "If you're going to change your operating system, be prepared to have to change your software" is still valid.
However you can't know things until you actually run the software, and this experiment showed that the rest of the suite still works.
