i got about 1 gb of pictures i wanted to put on a 4.7 dvd but the encoding time is ridicuous. First off if i just want slide shows with menus does it even need to encode? But, i wait forever it seems and the process bar doesn't even move. I'll get my notebook specs. But, besides that its buggy and it freezes. Had to voice myself sorry if this has been already brought up.

If you are making a slide show, of course it encodes, to make it a DVD compliant movie.
If it sits at zero, it indicates that you need to update your video driers. List your system specs, similar to how I have mine listed in my signature.

Go to the nVidia website and download and install the latest drivers for your card. It may be new to you, but drivers supplied can be quite some time out of date
Uninstall the existing ones first (force the computer to that horrible 16 colour VGA display) and then install the new ones. Also, update DirectX to the latest version from Microsoft (this isn't included with the normal Windows Updates and has to be obtained and installed separately)

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed
