can't burn DVD but can burn data file burning DVD's

I made a home movie using WMM and saved it to my computer in the .avi format. I try to burn using Sonic Digital Media Deluxe V7 and every new disk I put in gives me the error message to insert a blank or rewriteable disk. I have tried burning a large movie using Verbatim DVD+R DL and a small movie using Memorex DVD-R - same message with both. I can burn data files on Memorex CD-RW without any trouble. I've contacted HP and they had me go back to Version 10 of Windows Media Player and downloaded a fix for errors I was getting when I quit Sonic.

I'm desperate any suggestions?
