I have had EMC 9 installed for some time and working very well.  Yesterday my computer developed the issure requiring that I clear LowFilters and Highfilters to regain access to my optical drives.  That was successful and Vista was able to access the optical drives.  However, ECM 9 was unable to detect any of the drives.  I have studied the discussion groups, I have removed and reinstalled ECM.  I have the used the Clean Install process for Vista and reinstalled ECM.  This has not worked.

I did find the references to three PX Engine patches pxengine3_00_58a.zip, pxengine2_08_40d.exe, and pxengine1_08_34a.exe).  While it was not clear that these applied to Vista, I did try them (both normal execution and running as an administrator).  In each case the result was the same.  An error screen labeled "Sonic Px Engine Setup" with a message - "Unable to write to the current directiory..."  The message goes on to talk about changing permissions for the directory to allow read/write access.

I am at a loss at this point.  One clear conclusion is to reload Vista but hopefully their is something less extreme.

It the Px Engine patches are appropriate for Vista, are there any instructions for using them.

To recap, Vista is able to see each of the drives (2-DVD, one external, and 1-CD), I can read meda in each of them, burning capability has been tested on two of the drives.  I can forward model numbers, etc but this would not appear to be the issue since the were working two days ago.  The machine is a Dell Precision 380 with 2-gigs of memory and has been running Vista Business since the first of the year.

I just received a brand new Dell laptop with Roxio EMC 9 DE, and I'm having the same issue. Roxio doesn't recognize the drive at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem in a new Dell desktop. It started when I disabled the upper and lower filters too.
It seems to be a highly recurring issue of this version.

Does anyone know how to fix?

Okay... brand new machine, with the Dell version of EMC 9 installed, and it doesn't recognize your drive?  Call Dell.  Probably not what you want to hear, but it should've been delivered working and they'll be your best source of support at this point.

Ok but mine is NOT a new Dell desktop,  it is a machine that was delivered with XP, clean install of Vista with all drivers updated.  And EMC9 worked well for several months until I had the high filter/low filter problem.   So I would appreciate an answer.  I would be willing to replace EMC9 with EMC10 if there was some chance that it would help...

Have you tried deleting the drive from Windows device manager and letting Vista "rediscover" it?  Otherwise, you may need to do a full uninstall and reinstall of EMC 9.

Thank you I just tried to uninitall the drives in the Device Manager and let Vista rediscover them during a reboot.  No difference.  As I mentioned in my original post I have reinstalled ECM9 both without and with the Vista clean install process.

To be clear, this situation started between transferring a dvd video to media.  The first one completed successfully, I tried the next on the next morning and found that I did not have access in Windows to any of the optical drives. I used the Microsoft recommended process to delete the high filter/low filter entries in the registry.  After that I was able to have complete access to the drives in Vista but ECM9 could not detect the drives.  I then tried a Control Panel uninstall and reinstall, followed by doing the same thing but using the clean installl process found on this site.

I appreciate the help...

In case anyone is interested, installing 9.1 update did solve this problem.  I would conclude that the issue was with ECM 9 and wonder why it is so problematic for ECM 9 to detect the presence of optical drives that are capable of writing to a CD or DVD.  However, I am far more pleased that I can now use my machine's capability to do my work rather than focusing on getting hardware and software to work.  Best wishes...
