Hello,
I am trying to record from LPs to my computer. I have EMC 9 installed. I have an OPTIMUS LAB 1100 fully automatic turntable with built-in pre-amp. Years ago I successfully recorded from LPs using this turntable but in Windows 98 and using a very much earlier version of Roxio - like 6 or something. The turntable because it has a built-in pre-amp is supposed to just plug into the Line-in hole on the back of the computer and voila! I am meant to have sound. However, I have no sound and I get a message when I open the LPs conversion section of EMC9 which says "No recording device found". I have already received a reply to a "ticket" posted to Roxio and tried all of their tips to no avail. I am becoming impatient waiting for replies - the first one took about a week to come back to me and I don't want to have to wait that long again. Can anyone out there help me - what is wrong?

I think that the problem is Vista may not be seeing the Line-In from your sound card.Go to the Control Panel,Sound and see what devices are enabled under the recording tab.If you see Line-in is it enabled? If not try right clicking and enabling.

Even without EMC 9, you should be able to listen to your LPs playing through your sound card. That will guarantee that at least that much of your OS and hardware are working. If you can't get any of your LP music to come out of your speakers, then EMC 9 won't fix it, it needs that part to already be working.

Unfortunately, I have almost no experience with Vista, so I don't dare try and give you an answer based on Windows 2000/XP.

Vista does seem to be plagued with audio problems. Check this Windows site to see if there's anything there that may help

Thanks threwst. I tried your idea. There is only the microphone there and nothing else. I right clicked and ticked a box which sais show hidden devices but nothing else showed up. I have actually plugged the turntable in there, I cannot hear the sound while I am recording into Roxio, but when I open up what was recorded I then get sound - not a great scenario since I have to keep a serious eye on the turntable, but it kind of working. Thanks mate. blink.gif

Gidday, that is what I thought. I am going to look at what the next fella said. He/she has given me a Windows site link to look at. Actually, so far I have found Vista to be okay - not a lot different to all the other Windows and a lot of security stuff that gets in the way - but then these days its likely needed. Thanks for your input. smile.gif

I downloaded a recent release for the driver for my supposed sound card (from your Microsoft site) - it installed - the Roxio actually now recognises that there is a recording device attached when plugged into the Line-in, (previously it only recognised it when plugged into the microphone socket on the front of the tower) but still no sound while the actual LP is playing on the turntable. I am wondering now if the pre-amp in the turntable is perhaps not working.................................

You should be able to test the turntable by connecting it to your stereo system. (Use an Aux or Tape input, not a phono input since your turntable already has a preamp.) If that works, then we could be down to some settings on your sound card mixer. But start by determining if you're getting a signal from your turntable and let us know how you make out.

I had the same problem with any audio input device coming in to my sound card. The audio is actually coming in but you can't hear it thru the sound card. If you record and then try to play it back, you should hear it. I contacted Dell (New Vista PC) and they walked me thru a resolution which included a change in the Registry. I wish I had kept notes on what they did for me but I was having so many problems with Vista at the time, I didn't keep track - Sorry!!

Try contacting you PC Manufaturer if in Warranty or Microsoft. There were at least four or five prodeures to get the Sound working. I'll see if I can find any more info on what I did - Good Luck!

Now that you got new drivers and it sees the inputs from your sound device then not hearing the sound is probably what Dave is getting at.Chances are one of the volumes is muted or not enabled.Try going back to the control panel, doing as you did before to look for disabled devices. If you find any enable them and then look to make sure that Line-in is not muted for record or playback.

That sounds like it could be very handy. I've tried contacting Dell but my warranty just ran out so they want me to pay to make contact. They knock back email contact as well. Since I live in Australia that might get fairly expensive. I wait with anticipation to see if you find anything out. I have been recording with no sound then working on it later in Roxio once I can hear the sound. All of that is working a treat. So far I don't have any problems with Roxio - never have actually - ever since the first version I ever got. I notice version 10 came out yesterday (that's here in Australia). They want a considerable amount for it too - since I've only had 9 for about two months, think I might wait a while. Anyway, too much chatter.......I hope I hear from you again. Many thanks for the input - it gives me hope..............

Hi, did that - actually found extra devices once I got the drivers. Turned up all the volume controls I could find - still the same though. Thanks

Gidday, actually I don't have a stereo anymore - it went to God only recently. It was quite old. This is the second turntable I had for it - though this was bought especially because of the pre-amp. Never needed the stereo to record to PC since I got it - which made life really easy, since the stereo was quite bulky. Unless I can find someone with a stereo around me I won't be able to do that test. I have a son who is at sea at the moment and lives a few hundred ks away. When he gets back on land I might get him to bring his portable stereo down and try it on that - unless of course we have all resolved the problem in the meantime. Love this Roxio community by the way - so much easier than the Microsoft one. Sounds like Gary might have an answer if he gets back to me. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

So, it sounds like you're now able to record (without listening) and then have a workable audio file to work with? If so, then we know that your turntable is fine, no need to have your son drag something over. Assuming that's working, then as you record, you can probably see level indicators on the screen moving with the music? Use those to set your recording level to keep it below clipping.

Something else you could try would be to get a "Y" headphone 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo adapter, and plug your PC speakers into that as you record. The "Y" adapter will plug in where your turntable goes into your PC now, then your turntable will plug into one side, and the speakers into the other. There should be enough signal there to be able to listen while the turntable plays. Of course, once you get to working on the music on the PC, then you'll need to re-plug the speakers into the PC's speaker output.

Good luck!

Hi Vicki,
Sorry but I couldn't find anything on how I resolved the problem. I understand your Dell Warranty is over but, if your PC came with Vista, try contacting Dell sales and explain the situation. Mention that even the warranty is over this is the first time your trying to use the sound card "THAT CAME ON THE PC" and it hasn't worked from the beginning. Then politely ask how you might be able to get it resolved. You might mention that you thought Dell was very conscientous about their customer support and you are dissapointed with them. (Ya get a lot more with a request when it's sugar-coated!!)

Good luck and sorry I couldn't help further.
