Someone at Roxio who actually knows something please try and answer this as the online help is appalling!
I have upgraded through various metamorhous's of Easy Media Creator always hoping for great things only to be dissapointed again. Just purchased EMC 10 and the DVD's i write with MyDVD will not work on my new Sony dvd player that plays any type of disc, they WILL however play on my PC and an Xbox. I am using DVD+/-RW (philips) ie good quality media.
For many years I have been authoring my DVD's with Sonics MyDVD Ver 5. which is quite simply an amazing program that works superbly well. I have had to reinstall it yet again because EMC MyDVD does not work. So to recap my new version of EMC will not burn DVD's to work on my telly but the old Sonic MyDVD does using the exact same RW DVD disc!
So Roxio do you have a patch or update to fix this before I ask for a full refund? angry.gif

There are no patches for v10 - and even if there were, I'd doubt very much that they will cure your problem

If the DVD is playing in two locations but not in a third, I'd immediately suspect the media.

Although you are buying a 'name' brand, you should be aware that most of those are out-sourced and are not produced by the 'name' that appears on them. It's quite possible that the ones you just bought are from a different manufacturer and your settop player just doesn't like them
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

So why do they read perfectly when written by my old Version 5 of Sonic MYDVD. Guess it's a refund then, and Nero!

Have you tried a regular +R or -R disc? It would appear that the burn is good, and for whatever reason, your Sony doesn't like the RW disc burned with EMC 10.

R media has less reflectivity than commercially pressed discs (which have the pits and lands -optical equivialent of magnetic 0's and 1's) physically pressed into the metal.

RW media has even less reflectivity than R media.

So it could be your player doesn't like the particular brand of media, or it may not like RW media in general, or it may be a symptom of trouble for the media player.

If any of those three possibilities - it is unlikely changing the brand of burning software will make much difference.

Lynn

Having owned a few Sony players, it has been my experience that Sony makes players that are more "sensitive" to brands of RW media. You may have already done this, but you should try some basic troubleshooting steps that include: 1. Purchasing a different brand of RW media (give Sony's a try since you have their player); 2. Purchase a DVD +/-R and see if it exibits the same behavior; 3. Make sure your firmware is current on both burner and player (yes, even a set-top player); 4. Take one of your authored discs to a store and try to play in the same player or other players on display.

Question: You mentioned DVD +/-RW media. I'm not familiar with a media that is both + and -. Was that a typo or does that media exist? If so, I would definitely try either + or - only depending on your burner and player. I've been authoring DVDs for a long time and back in the day it was a trial and error process to find the magic combination of burner, software, media, and player to get reliable results. It was bad enough that when I found that combination, I purchased identical players for my family so they could watch my discs. My personal opinion is that even if your burner is +/- and your player is +/-, pick a single format media and stick with it if it works.

Also, you may want to post more specs regarding your burner and player (brand, model no., etc). Others may be having the same issue and have found a solution already. If your burner is getting old like me, you may want to upgrade to the latest and greatest to see if that helps. Again, give Sony a try. If you have a Sony burner, media, and player, you may get more traction with Sony to resolve issues. I personally gave up on Sony when I found that a cheap player handled media better than my Sony 400 disc jukebox. I now have an LG player as my primary and a Samsung SATA burner.

Good luck!

Thanks Paul, what i meant was i have tried both -RW and +RW neither work with EMC10, also tried -r again no go. Now if i use sonic mydvd they all work great i have never had a problem with burnt discs not reading, it really has to be something slightly different in the writing process as to why a new sony player that reads all types of discs will not read EMC10 discs. However i will get some other types to try probably Verbatim as someone else recommended. Watch this space! By the way i am using a lite-on writer LH-18A1H, one other thing windows xp reports in "my computer" that D: (writer) is; DVD-RAM Drive(D:) is that correct or should it say the writers real name ie; lite-on ?
Many thanks Pat.

roxioconfusion,
naming the drives is possible with a registry edit, it doesn't happen automatic.

Even thought it is "fun" to troubleshoot these types of issues, hopefully you are still within your window to return the software (if there is any window at all). If so, you may want to consider returning ver. 10.

With that said, the latest firmware for your drive is dated 7/20/2007. Here's a link to the download:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/twnmain/DOWN...re/DR18HL06.zip

Also, here's a link for the Booktype / Bitsetting Utility for DVD reader compatibilty. It has been awhile since I played with this kind of stuff, but if I remember correctly (and someone tell me if I'm wrong), some writing software "forces" the booktype and some software uses the drive default. So... My leap of faith here is that Sonic may be forcing a setting your Sony player likes, and EMC isn't. Or vice/versa (Sonic using defaults and EMC forcing). Either way, since the experiment is with RW and not R media, you aren't producing permanent coasters! The "more details" link opens a nice PDF with all the information necessary. Personally, I don't try to understand all if it, I just change it to see if it works. wink.gif

The BitSetting is something that requires a utility from the Burner Manufacture to set. It cannot be set by burning software.

Once set, every 'plus' disc will be set to DVD-ROM unless you run the manufactures utility to turn it off.

Just another thing though, in my dvd \ burn project window \ i notice that in the image file \ target media section it says '-r dl' which is greyed out and nothing i do will change it. I mean nothing ticking boxes etc. I am wondering if the program is writing -r dl instead of +rw as it should be. Just a thought!

It isn't writing to any media format. It is writing an image file that can be burned to any type of DVD media. Mine shows -r dl also.

Usually a greyed out box means that's not a choosable option - in your case it's probably trying to tell you that you can't select that, so I doubt if it would be writing -r dl

Can you specify the regedits needed?
I can rename hard drive partitions from within Windows Explorer, but can't find how to change the names that appear for my optical drives in Windows Explorer ('DVD-RAM Drvive' for my Lite-on DH20A3P, which in device manager appears as ATAPI DVD A DH20AA3P, and 'DVD/CD-RW; drive for my NEC ND3100. It would be nice to have them named as you show.

EDIT
I should have googled first:

How to Rename a CD or DVD Drive in Windows XP/2000

1. Start > Run > Regedit

2. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D\Default Label

Assuming D is the name of your drive letter.

In the left explorer pane.

1: If there is no DriveIcons Key you will have to make one. (hi-light the Explorer key, then right click and select New Key, name it DriveIcons.

1: Assuming D is the letter of your CD/DVD drive.

2: If there is no key named D(or whatever your drive letter is) you will have to make the key, (hi-light the DriveIcons Key and right click and select New Key, name it to whatever your drive letter is) eg: D

3: If you have two drives, you will have to make keys for each drive, eg: D: & F: or whatever the drives letters are. (then follow below.)

4: Then create a key named DefaultLabel, (create one by right-clicking the key for your drive "in this case, D" and selecting New > Key. name it DefaultLabel)

5: If you have two drives you will have to make a key named DefaultLabel for each drive letter, see 3 above.

Now in the right explorer pane

5. Then change the (Default) value to the label you want. to do this right click the (Default) value and select modify, then enter what you want to call your drive. if you have two drives you will have to change both (Default) values for each drive.

There is always the old fall back. When you go to burn the disc, chose to create an ISO file. When it encodes, just copy that ISO file to your disc. I don't know why but that sometimes works for people with players not reading the disc.
