I'm totally new to this. In fact I do not even own any DVR yet. I am excited about the idea of transferring video from a TiVo to my mac, but I don't know which TiVo to buy. I am also wondering if I have to subscribe to TiVo services or if I can just use the device as a stand alone dvr and still use the TivoToGo transfer process with Toast 8. It sounds like the TiVo and the mac communicate through an ethernet local network. If I could get this stuff to work without being a TiVo subscriber I'd be a happy camper. -- Matt

Maybe I just need a dvr that will transfer usable files to a mac. Is there a good option to do this?

You need to pay for the TiVo service to use the TiVo. You need a Series 2 TiVo as the TiVo to Go feature doesn't yet work with the others.
You might want to look instead at an ElGato EyeTV.
There's a forum about using Macs as part of a home theater system Here.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!
