(In topic description "DVD_R2L" should read "DVD+R2L".)

I am trying to copy a large folder from my hard drive onto 4 or 5 DVD-R discs.  I specify DVD 4.7GB for disc size.  The first disc seems to be written to ok, but then it calls for a DVD+R2L disc for the 2nd disc.  The message is:

Insert Disc
Please insert a blank disc in this drive.
NOTE: Be sure to mark the disc that has just been recorded as number 1 in the set of 4.  Also mark the next blank disc as number 2 in the set of 4.
(Possible disc types are: DVD+R Double Layer)

If I insert a DVD-R disc I get the message:

Insert Disc
Please in sert a disc in this drive with at least this amount of free space: 2,398,928 blocks (533:05:53 MSF / 4.6GB)
(Possible disc types are: DVD+R Double Layer)

At that point I cancel the copy.  This gives the message:

Error
There was an error trying to open the file.

I have only one DVD drive on my laptop.

Another little strangeness in this copy effort is that in the bottom of the Roxio Classic Creator window it says it estimates five discs will be required, but when the copy starts it says four discs will be required.  I guess the second number is after Roxio has calculated the space required more accurately.

I appreciate any help anyone can give me on this problem.

Al

In Creator Classic, go to File – Project Properties – and make sure you do not have a checkmark by "Do not split files in multi-disc projects"

That should allow the burn to proceed.

FYI: None of us trust spanned projects! If there is anyway you can manually set up a burn project/projects without spanning, DO IT!

Thanks for your suggestions, James.  I had already checked "Do not split files in multi-disc projects".  However,  your recommendation to avoid spanning discs was a good one and that has worked for me.

Thanks for the tip, it also appears to have solved my problem.

Odd though, I have a Vista computer and an XP computer, both the exact same version of Roxio Backup 9.  On the Vista computer I was able to write to 5 DVD+/-RW's in one backup job with the "don't split files across spanned disks" setting, but on the XP one it kept doing the error that the first posting mentions until I tried it without this setting after seeing your posting.  I didn't want it to split files so that I can if need be recover the files without the aid of Roxio Restore (the files are written natively lower in the subdir structure)... because I'd rather not rely on having the exact same backup software and/or version when I may have to restore this stuff potentially years later.

Why would it work OK on the Vista PC but not the XP one?

Not sure if this is related but my original backup job was across 16 DVD's and it never got to the initial burn stage, it died when assembling the job with some cryptic 8 character error message (sorry, didn't write it down).  I tried splitting it up into 3 separate burns which is when the 1st DVD was OK but not the 2nd.  However since removing the don't split option, even the 16 DVD backup job seems to be running smoothly.

Thanks
James
