Avi is a 'wrapper' and can be in any one of a number of formats and you will need the proper codec

You would need to run gspot (available free here) and open the file with that to see which codec you need to download and install
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I thought I was a rather savvy computer person, and have never had problems burning DVDs in the past, but with this program I seem to have problems burning AVI files as well...

I downloaded the program you suggested, and attempted to figure it out...but I don't understand what it's telling me, or how I'm supposed to use it.

If I do figure out what codec is needed, when I download and install it, will Roxio then be able to recognize my AVI files, or do I need to convert them to some other form of AVI?

Thank you very much!

JKust run gspot and at the top left, browse for the file - the info will be at the top right

Alternatively, right click on the avi, go to 'open with' and browse for gspot

It's a pretty safe bet tho that this is the codec you need

Yeah, I had already figured that much out with the gspot program, and it basically said I already have three capable codecs.

I used DivX to convert the file to a DivX file (which Roxio 9 also says it's compatible with) but I ran into the same exact problem as I did with the AVI file...

Please advise.

Thanks!

There must be something awry with the file if it can't be rendered - but just what is a bit of a mystery. Usually just having the correct codecs is sufficient.

Can the file play on the computer?

Yeah, it plays perfectly in real player.

Edit to add: The file shows up when I'm trying to add it to the list in Roxio, it just has a red X on it, and doesn't allow me to actually select the file. I'm not sure if that helps or not, but I wanted to establish that Roxio at least recognizes it as a file.

Now we're getting somewhere - Real Player is a proprietary format and Roxio can't handle it.

The file will have to be converted out of that to a format that EMC can handle

[Well, as I mentioned earlier, I did convert the file to a DivX using DivX codec converter, but had the same problem even in that format.

Do you have any recommendations on how to convert the file so EMC can handle it?

You could try Super (google it).  It converts almost anything.
Is this file an original Realplayer file or was it converted to Real?  Exactly what type of file does Gspot say it is?

I am having the same problem. All my avi files cant be added when authoring a DVD. I remember I have done in the past so I thought it might be a codec problem but I have tried everything in that department with no luck. Has they been any headway made on this topic?

What does Gspot tell you these files are?  It's possible you may have a codec conflict so you might try uninstalling them and reinstalling them back.

If you have EMC 9 ( as opposed to EMC 9.1) then it may be that the divx decoder that EMC uses (called DivXDec.ax, note mixed upper and lower case letters) has got scrambled with the divx codec from Divx.com (for which the file is divxdec.ax, note all lower case), should you have installed that.

See http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=8841

With 9.1 the problem was partly solved because it puts the EMC divx codec files in a different place, but the registry entries may still be pointing to the old place.

To help further, could you please search for divxdec.ax on your hard drive and report back the locations of all instances found, and whether the name is mixed case or all lower case. To ensure you find all instances, in control panel, folder options, View tab, check show hidden files and folders, uncheck hide extensions for known file types, uncheck hide protected system operating files, click Apply OK. In search, click on more advanced options, check the first three boxes.

Wirh that information, we can (probably) suggest what to do to get Videowave to accept divx encoded avi or .divx files..
