I have a new Laptop. It is an HP Compaq nx-9420. It apparently came pre-loaded with a suite of Sonic software. Since I never directly use it, I was unaware of its existence until this morning.

This morning I was installing MS Flight Simulator software. It is comprised of 2 DVD's. At the completion of the first DVD, I was presented with
"Sonic DLA has located files on your disc that are currently in use. To avoid possible data loss, save any changes to open files, close open applications and retry this operation."

The message was modal, in that I was unable to take any other actions. The only other running application was Outlook, albeit myriad ancillary support processes. Behind that message was the standard, insert Disc # 2 to continue. The DVD drive button was unresponsive.

I attempted to close the Sonic message but it continually re-surfaced. Finally, I went into the task manager and knocked down the offending process and was able to reverse the installation of the software I was trying to attempt to install.

I had captured the Error message and did a search on the Web for resolution. I only want to install some software. I found hundreds of similar complaints but the only resolution was to remove all traces of Sonic and replace with various competitor products.

I went into Add or Remove Programs and found Sonic DLA. I am still unsure of its purpose. I clicked Change and repair but do not think anything of significance happened. I clicked the support information link and found myself here. The version on my Laptop is 5.2.0.

All along I am thinking about my company and how I handle such things. I am the director of software development with a food processing yield management company. We distribute PC’s with our equipment installs and I approve the image that is installed on those machines. We often install limited versions of our products in effort to deeper penetrate our market and test new opportunities. We also distribute partner’s software and have our software distributed, likewise. It is not to say that we have never released unintended features (bugs), but when such a release occurs, I dictate that my developers aggressively correct the anomaly and distribute a patch, hot-fix or update. Even though our customers have not purchased the offending software, we regard it as a reflection of our company and go to great length to remedy the situation. It is our name on that computer and that is what our customer remembers. But we are just one business.

But let me not digress any longer and please tell me what I must do to install some software that I may use to relax any to many 12 hour days.

Thanks

You may want to uninstall DLA, since it is causing problems.

It is Sonic's flavor of packet-writing (q.v.) and you can live quite well without it. Besides, a banshee is likely to come along here shortly and lecture you with a cut'n'pasted sermon about how it will 'permantly' delete all your data, scratch your CD collection, and make your cat have kittens. smile.gif
