Toast 6.1.1 - in

Then I click the record disk button and that's when I get the interface error mentioned above. If I click ok and let it continue to encode, I eventually get the following error messages:
Sense Key - Illegal request
cannot write medium
incompatible format
sense code 0x30, 0x05
In the past, I have been able to accomplish this task.
I have a G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.
Please let me know if you need any more information.
Thanks very much in advance for any advice or assistance with this issue,
Janey

Is it possible you are using the wrong kind of discs? If you go to System Profiler and click Disc Burning is the kind of media you are using shown as supported? If so, please tell me the brand and type.

Tsanti,
Thank you very much for replying.
After following the instructions, I tried to burn using the image file gave me the same error codes:
Interface error: -50 The connection is not stable
The drive reported an error: Sense Key + ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x26
INVALID FIELD IN PARAMETER LIST
I am using Memorex DVD -R.
I would greatly appreciate any other thoughts or recommendations.

Memorex media is a problem for some drives. Give another brand a try. That may not be the issue but at least we'll eliminate it as a likely suspect. Also, change the .toast extension on the disc image file to .iso and try using Disk Utility to burn the image file to DVD.

Tsanti,
I changed the extension. Where is Disc Utilities? Is it in the Roxio program?

It is Disk Utility. It is an Apple application in your Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.

OK I opened Disk Utilities, the burn icon is not highlighted. Also, what do I highlight in order to burn: the disk itself or the Toast Titanium program. So sorry for the questions...

Since the Burn icon is not active that means there is a problem with the Mac seeing the optical drive as a disc burner. If you open System Profiler and choose Disc Burning my guess is you won't see support for burning any DVD media.
This can be due to a failed drive, a faulty connection or to the OS itself. A few years ago my new G4 iBook arrived in a condition where it wouldn't see the built-in drive for burning discs. Reinstalling the OS cured the problem But I think it is the least likely of the three possible causes in your case.

Tsantee,
Thank you. That makes sense. I think it is the 2nd choice: a faulty connection. If that IS the case, do you have any idea how to trouble shoot that???
Thanks, again.

Sorry but I'm not brave enough for that. You might just go out an buy a new external disc burner. I rarely use the internal drives on my Macs because my Firewire LaCie drive is better.

Tsantee,
One more question, and that's all I promise. I'm thinking it could be an upgrade issue. Do you think it would help to upgrade my Toast to 8?

I don't think that will make a difference in a situation where Disk Utility also doesn't burn to the drive. However, if you take my suggestion of buying an external drive there are some that come with Toast 8 included with the drive (such as from LaCie).
If you have a friend who has an external optical drive connected to either a PC or a Mac, ask to borrow it as a test.

Tsantee,
I am breaking my promise of no more questions, because I already am using the LaCie Dual DVD+- RW drive. It is external and it is able to READ DVDs that are already burned. I purchased it new about 2 years ago. What do you think? Do you think it could be the problem?

So the problem is with an external drive? In that case download and apply Apple's OS combined system update. Let's say you are using 10.3.9. Download the 10.3.9 combined system update from Apple's support site. Then run the installer. The same goes with 10.4.10.
There often are times when incremental system updates cause Firewire or USB link problems that are fixed by applying the combined updater. That may be the problem here.

Thank you. I will try that.

I just went through this exact problem and with Memorex media as well. It turns out that my Lacie D2 DVDrw was not compatible with the Memorex media. There is a solution and it works. Lacie has created a firmware updater, and posted it on their site that will detect which Lacie drive you have and update your drives firmware. http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10063
Good luck and spread the word, this seems to be happening to allot of people.
