I have a Dell Inspiron B130 notebook that came pre-installed with Sonic Digital Media LE7 installed. I am running Windows XP SP2, and have an NEC ND-6650A DVD burner.
Until recently I have had no problem formating and writing DVDs through Windows Explorer by simply right clicking on my (D:) drive and selecting "Format" from the popup window, then dragging and dropping or copying and pasting the files I want to burn to DVD to the (D:) drive. However, the last time I went to do this the "Format" and "Make Disk Compatible" options were missing, along with all of the other features needed to burn a DVD. I have made sure that "Use with DLA" is selected. Instead one of the options was "Explore Using Corel Paintshop Pro". When I attempted to click "Properties" a "Windows Installer" window popped up and requested I insert the installation disk for Corel Paintshop Pro. I failed to see what Paintshop Pro had to do with viewing Properties on a DVD drive, having a sample version that came pre-installed with the computer I thought it could be a problem and uninstalled it. After this the problem reaccured except for requesting I insert the installation disk for Adobe Photoalbum, I also uninstalled this program and finally is has requested that I inster the installation disk for Sonic Digital Media 7. (which I do not have as it came pre-installed on the computer).
After this I attempted to Format the disk from the program itself by doubleclicking the DVD/CD writing Icon and choosing "Direct to Disc" copying, however when I clicked "Format" an error message poped up stating "Waiting for device-the drive may be disconnected or in use by another program". I checked the device manager and it says "the device is working properly"...I have installed the latest drivers from the Dell website.
Finally I attempted to update the program by searching for updates from the "Help" menu, however when it gets to the point where I am asked to save the program to my computer a runtime error pops up stating "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORER.exe-abnormal program termination" then several error messages pop up aluding to "MediaHub.exe" and a final runtime error pops up stating "Program:...common files\Sonic Shared\Sonic Central\Main\Mediahub.exe-R6025-pure virtual function call"

When three different programs from three different makers all start giving problems, you have a severe problem.
First of all - did you install IE7 and/or WMP11? These can wreck older versions of some software and will wreck EMC 7.5 (I'm not sure if you have that or not as you refer to 'Sonic Digital Media 7' - EMC7 was Roxio and 7.5 came after the Sonic takeover, but it's moot - those two MS 'upgrades' will wreck both)
If you have them installed - remove them. Unfortunately you will almost certainly have to re-install EMC and, I would advise that you contact Dell for a CD which has the program on it
You may have to bite the bullet, backup all data and do a complete reinstall of the OS and all programs

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I have Windows Mediaplayer 11 installed...but it came pre-installed on the computer...and I have had no problems with my Sonic DLA until just now and have been burning DVDs since I got the computer a year and a half ago. I am still using IE6. Also I am not sure it was the other programs giving me problems, but simply Sonic DLA or something about the DVD writer causing the problems.

As already stated by gi7omy, contact Dell it is their OEM version of Roxio.

well after an hour or so of searching I was able to find some Sonic DLA updates on Dell's website. There were two and they really didn't differentiate between them, but I just chose the one with the highest version number and downloaded it. It unistalled the old DLA and installed the new one. IT still doesn't work like it used to, I got a runtime error again and for some reason when I click properties on my DVD burner it still pops up the windows installer window, but eventually shows me the properties...
However, I am now able to format my disk, copy and paste files that are being burned and make the disk compatible. So in its own way it works and that is all I am concerned with at the moment.
Thank you for the replies.

Using any packet writing software, to store important files, is like playing Russian Roulette. You will eventually find that out.
Use Creator Classic instead. No formatting of the discs is needed.
Life is good!

He doesn't even have Roxio! It is a Sonic program he describes just posted in the wrong area and no one bothered to move it.
But your still right about packet writers and DLA is no exception…

I am actually thinking it was possibly McAfee that might have screwed it up, it was blocking registry changes.
