Please accept what may be a basic question from a very new Roxio user....

I have Easy Media Creator 9 Premier -- came on a new Dell laptop, but I paid extra for it, so it should be more than just a stripped down OEM version.

I have home movies that I created on DVD, copied from VHS on a separate DVD/VHS combo recorder.    Now I would like to read those DVDs into EMC 9, and extract segments from them to construct new subject-specific DVD's.    Problem is that I cannot find a feature in EMC that would allow me to extract components of a DVD.   I can read / copy the entire DVD, but I cannot decompose the DVD into segmented video files.

Is this possible to do with EMC 9?   Is there a different product that is required to do that?   (I have seen reference to a product called VideoWave in other topics that sounds like it might have this capability.)   What is recommended here?

One other comment -- my computer unfortunately did not come with a tuner, and it has no input jacks to accept video straight from a DVD player.   Hence, I really need to input the video content from a DVD disk.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Please elaborate a little bit. EMC9 is fully capable of importing a DVD (MediaImport). It will show each title on a DVD and you can select chapters to import (if they exist). If it is all one title with no chapters, then you must import the entire title. VideoWave (part of EMC9) can then be used to edit.

Mark,
Thanks for your quick reply.    I select MyDVD 9, then select Capture/Import, click on the Video tab, and then select my DVD drive.   At this point, a disk name "DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER is shown, but there is no further detail in the window, and the "Import Now" button is greyed out.   It is as if the program cannot read the disk.

Note though that outside of Roxio, I am able to play the DVD successfully via Windows Media Player.

Am I just missing something basic in using the import feature?

Thanks again,

The only thing I can think of that could be causing your problem is a quirk of the MediaImport program (but there certainly can be other reasons). When DVDs are created, there is a final menu item that is normally not visible. It is a zero-length entry which holds the time remaining on the DVD. If, when you created the DVD, you made one title and then erased it, this places a zero-length entry marker holding the space that was used. Unfortunately, when MediaImport sees this marker, it doesn't read any further on the DVD for additional titles.

However, there is a way around this. I have EMC10 so I can't guarantee you can do this with EMC9, but give it a try.
1. Open the Video Copy and Convert program (sometimes listed as Compile DVDs and Movies).
2. Select the Video Compilation button at the top left.
3. Click on the Add Movies button.
4. Navigate to your DVD drive and select on the VIDEO_TS directory.
5. This should give you a listing (doubled - each entry twice) of all titles on the DVD.

Just select the titles and then on the right side, select to create MPEG-2 and output to a file. Note if you want separate files, just do one entry at a time.

Mark,
Thanks for the detailed info.   I don't think I've changed any disk titles, but I have changed chapter titles.  But from your description, I am wondering if I really have a full EMC product.   I don't see any reference to the features you are describing.   Plus, I searched for the terms "convert", "compile", "compilation" in the help files, and got no hits.

I captured the "About this Product" information and have copied it below.   Can you tell from this if I really have what I need?

Thanks again very much for your help.

Sorry ... I'm getting used to my EMC10. In EMC9, look in the Disc Copy - advanced mode. They re-arranged and renamed things in EMC10.

A known bug of V9 is that it cannot import from a disc!

Either copy the folders and contents from the disc to your HD or just copy the .vob files to your HD and rename them to .mpg.

Thank you, James!  This seems to be the answer.   I've been able now to grab these video objects, rename them, and import them into MyDVD, so now I have some content with which to work and to learn that program!

Mark, I did check the copy disk function, and still could not find those features.   So, it must be a big difference between the versions.   Thanks though, for your replies and your attempts to help.
