Long Time To Burn Production Why does it take so long?

I have been messing with Roxio 9 for several weeks since I purchased it.

After updating the video drivers as mentioned here in the community, I finally got my production to encode.

After 13 hours it was at 62% complete. mad.gif My computer could not be used for much else while the encoding was taking place. (Can’t minimized the encoding screens)
I finally canceled it; I had other things I needed to get done.

Why does it take to so long to encode? Is there a way to speed up the process? My production was 3 less than an hour TV shows that I had taken out the commercials.
Nothing fancy at all.

I have a DELL machine 2.13 GHZ Dual Core, 1 gig of ram. Windows XP media edition
Sony DVD Burner.

Why can I transcode Recorded TV shows “as is” and burn them to a DVD in 1 hour or so?
Why does a production take so long?
Why does roxio 9 hog the PC and render it useless during encoding?

My desire is to be able to Trim out the commercials on Recorded TV shows that media center has stored and BURN to DVD. That should not take 18 +- hours to do? or maybe it does? Is all DVD software this way?

I am about ready to ask for my $$ Back? sad.gif

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

JJ

How were these shows recorded.....exactly what types of files are these? I'm guessing since you have the Media Center Edition, that's what you used for tv capture. If you captured them as mpeg, they shouldn't take long at all. I routinely capture an hour of tv at high quality, cut out the commercials and a 42 minute mpeg2 file takes me about 12-15 minutes to convert to dvd. If I take the same 42 minute divx file, my system will take about the same amount of time (40-45 minutes) to convert to a dvd.

What type of video card do you have? Do you have the latest DirectX? What type of media are you using?

The file extension on my recorded TV shows are .DVR-MS
I am guessing thats the media center file output.
Roxio transcodes these to .mpg
This function does not take long. After its converted / transcoded it burns to DVD pretty quick. It bogs only when its a production or a .dmsd file. As it transcodes it has a small window you can watch the scence's slowly being transcoded. for ever and ever and ever.!!!
I also just noticed that my production or .dmsd file is only 256KB in size? Go figure?

thanks
for the reply.

A dmsd file is simply one from MyDVD that contains nothing but notes indicating what it is you want your project to look like and a list of what is in it. There is not one drop of video in a dmsd file…

You are completely mistaken if you think MyDVD does a full conversion after you select a file. That only happens during the Render process which is why it takes so long.

The bottleneck is your DVR-MS files. Until they are converted to a compliant mpg, it is going to take time.

It doesn't effect speed, but Memorex is considered dumpter fodder...

Jon46013, I don't use Media Center often to record TV (I like GBPVR) but I will try recording a 1 hour show tonite via Vista Media Center and see how long it takes for my system to burn. If I remember correctly when I tried a small file shortly after installing Vista, using EMC9, MyDVD converted the DVR-MS file quickly and did not take very long to complete.
Give me some time and I'll get back to you.

DirectX is a programming interface allowing a wide variety of graphics hardware to perform similar functions. The newer the version on your machine, (usually) the better the performance and interoperability between software and hardware. Go to this link to download the latest version of DirectX. DirectX is not updated by Windows Update or Microsoft Update. You should also check the NVIDIA web site to verify you have the latest driver for your video card.

To all!!

Thanks for your input!! But you should know I burt 2 DVDs today with no problems at all. I edtited my TV shows and EMC 9 enocode them and burnt them both in less than 1 hour.!! biggrin.gif

I must have been doing something wrong...cause it worked great today!! I even ventured in to making a couple slide shows and adding to one DVD production.

pretty happy about things right now.

Thanks again!!

Glad it sorted itself out. I was curious so I recorded just a 30 minute show in Vista Media Center, imported it into MyDVD, (with commercials intack) and let it do it's think. It did encode and took much longer than I thought it would. I know I tried something similar shortly after installing Vista and am positive it did not encode and went much faster. Not sure what's different this time.
No worries, you're at a happy place and let's leave it at that.
