I'm having difficulty burning standard DVD-R disks on EMC9 Disk Copier.  The problem is that it can't determine an allowable write speed for the disk.  If I select "Burn," a dialog pops up and asks me to select a burn speed.  The problem is that the drop-down list is blank.  The disks are all new.  It CAN read and burn to a DVD+R disk.

I had just uploaded the latest ROM image to my DVD drive which is on a 3 year-old Dell laptop.  I also used DVDinfo PRO to have a look.  On a DVD-R disk, it lists the write speed as "unknown."  Consequently, I'm not entirely convinced it's an EMC9 problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could check to fix this?

SolarGeek,
Your drives firmware is telling you the MID Media ID is "unknown.". Update your burner firmware and try Verbatim media.

Or, maybe your burner cannot write to DVD -R? Some older models can only write to DVD+R. For example my NEC ND-3000AD (vintage 2005) on my Dell desktop is like that. In DVD Info Pro, click on the drive icon, check your burner's capabilities; if there is no check mark to the right of DVD-R (middle column) in the 'drive supported write features', then that is the reason. As cdanteek suggests, there may be a firmware update that adds that capability, but not always (none for my NEC, but I have a second newer one that writes to practically everything. :-))

Edited: corrected the vintage of my DVD drive originally mistakenly typed as 1985 (hence subsequent comments from others)

Thanks for the reply, cdanteek.  My DVD drive is three years old and I just updated the firmware to the latest.  I had been burning to DVD-R with success previously.  I suspect your Verbatim suggestion is the key.  I went to videohelp.com and looked up my drive (NEC ND-6500A).  It lists peoples' experience using different brands of media.  The two I had been trying, Maxell and Sony, were giving other people problems also.  Verbatim appeared to work.  It was a small sampling of reports but it does indicate that not all media will work for everyone.

I've got Verbatim on my shopping list.  Thanks.

jeanrosenfeld,

Your suggestion was a good one.  I didn't know my drive had firmware that could be updated.  Now I've updated to the latest which is good nonetheless.  However, it wasn't the solution to my immediate problem.  I'll check burning using Verbatim-R to see whether it brings me success.

Thanks,
SolarGeek

Neither did I :-). I meant 2005, and have edited my post. You are quite entitled to tease me about it, though.
