i installed a new camera on my computer, and now MyDVD from Sonic automatically starts when i plug my old camera in. this has never happened before, and i'm not liking it.
i use windows explorer to access my cameras when i need to download pictures, but now that the Sonic program starts when the camera is plugged in and turned on, windows explorer cant even access the camera anymore.
it seems to have created its own association with the camera, windows explorer doesnt even see the camera as a removable disk now, so i cant access it through explorer.
it drives me nuts when a program decides to change things for me, without asking me. my comp was working just fine and i could access the old camera just fine through explorer, but now i cant. there's no options in any of the Sonic programs to un-associate it or to stop it from doing that - am i going to have to uninstall the program? i hope not, as it came with the computer so i dont have a install disk.
any ideas?
thanks

You didn't say which Operating Sytem you have. Changing file type associations is done in the Operating System.
For Win2000 (which is what I'm on at the moment), on the Control Panel click on 'Folder Options', and then the tab for 'File Types', and run the scrollbar down to the file type you want to re-associate. Click on the 'change' button, and proceed from there.
(Warning: this will make permanent changes on your computer.)
There is a comparable capability on WinXP, but at the moment the WinXP is turned off and I prefer it that way.

i'm on XP - not a big fan either, its such a memory hog.
i found the file associations, but i'm not sure which extension i'm looking for. there are a few associations that are linked to the Sonic programs, but none that seem to be related to the camera specifically.
would a camera have a specific extension other than something like jpg or other picture files formats (all the picture formats are associated with the correct program, so that doesnt seem to be it)
thanks
nick
edit: i changed the associations that i thought might be it, those for the sonic program, but the Sonic program still starts up when the cam is plugged in. seems that the associations arent necessarily the problem, but i'm not sure what else to look for. the camera still wont show up in windows explorer as a removeable drive as it did before, only way it works is if i remove the memory card from the camera and plug it into the memory stick reader on the computer.
would re-installing the camera drivers do it?

This has nothing to do with file association. Some applications use a TSR to recognize when devices have been plugged in - like a camera. For example, Ulead uses something called Autodetector. It boots at startup and stays in memory. When a camera is detected, it launches their application to transfer images.
Sounds like this may be the case with whatever Sonic application you have installed. If you don't want it to start, then run msconfig and look in the Startup Tab.

hmmm. the sonic programs were on my comp from the start, they came with the system. i'm starting to think this has nothing to do with sonic at all - though i dont understand why the Sonic program would start after installing this new camera, while the Sonic program never started with my older one. something got changed somewhere, just not sure what.
before i installed this new camera, i could access my old camera as though it were a removable storage device - thats actually what the computer recognized it as. now when i turn it on, the scanner/camera wizard trys to take over. i've shut that down from the camera properties, but it no longer sees the old camera as a removable storage device and sees it as a still camera.
nothing wrong with that except its about 3 times as slow to access the photos. oh well, this things about ready for a fresh start - i'm sure its nothing a good old fashion format cant fix.
thanks

You say you installed the camera. Was there software installed on the PC for the camera? Like Gary said, run msconfig, go to the startup tab and look for something that is associated with your camera.

yep, the software for the camera application and the drivers. i've since uninstalled both, to no avail, unfortunately.
i checked msconfig, and a few other things just to cover the bases. the Sonic program still starts up for some reason, but everything else seems to be back in order, except for the computer now seeing the camera as a camera, not a removeable storage device, but i guess thats no biggie.
i'll probably uninstall the sonic programs, i dont use them anyway.
thanks,
nick
