I tried to create a Lightscribe CD and before writing to it I was warned that an update of the software maybe necessary. I clicked YES and it went to the NERO site. I stopped the download and wrote the Lightscribe with the GENERIC option. Is this normal, why would it go to the NERO site?

Do you have (or did you have) Nero installed (possiblg as an OEM version with the Lightscribe drive)?
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Yes I believe I did when I initally setup the computer. I uninstalled it since I found it a bit confusing. Maybe I should look for an uninstall tool from Nero to remove all traces of their software?
Found this link for Nero uninstall tools if anyone else has problems.

If you need or want an update for your LightScribe, you can get the "LSS" (LightScribe System Software) directly from

Is that recommended to do, will the Roxio software use the updated LightScribe software or is this a separate software tool?

The Lightscribe software don't come with Roxio and not with nero. It is allways a separate software written by HP. The both burning suits are only abel to use that software for their output of Lightscribe labels.
For best results you should use the latest update of the 'LSS'
