I have a dell computer with windows xp and have in the past burned many cds with great success with this exact same setup, but I have not tried to burn any in months until recently. My burner is HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE-8481B. I now am trying to burn CDs for Xmas and the darn thing won't burn consistently. Everything looks fine while supposedly burning but nothing is burned when I try to play it except maybe one in five attempts is succesful. I'm making a lot of coasters!!!  It makes no sense to me. Why would it not burn five times, then burn correctly one time with no pattern?

I noticed that apparently there was a Roxio automatic update 7/15/07. I wonder if I need to update the firmware (which I don't know how to find where to do that), or if Roxio is corrupted or if my CD burner has gone bad. I don't know how to tell where the problem is so I can fix it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to diagnose and fix this problem.

Thanks,

Carl

Did you install, or allow Windows auto-update to install, Internet Explorer 7 and/or WinPlayer 11?

"I noticed that apparently there was a Roxio automatic update 7/15/07."

What version do you have?

EMC 7.x hasn't had an update for a couple of years now
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I do not have IE7 installed, but I just looked it up and WinPlayer 11 does appear to be installed.

Remove WMP11 - you may need to re-install EMC tho (the installation could be broken with WMP11)

This is what I have done so far in the following order. I removed Easy Media Creator 7.1.1.189 and then re-installed it as 7.0 and then download the one update again to make it  7.1.1.189. I restarted the computer. Then I read in the discussion group here about WinPlayer 11 interferring with Roxio, so I rolled it back to WinPlayer 9.0 and restarted the computer again. Then I tried to burn a CD and it still won't burn. It comes up as NO DISC.

Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Easy Media Creator all over again?

Is there any way to no if the problem is that the burner itself is fried? In Device Manger it says it is working correctly for whatever that is worth.

For some reason I am not getting an email when anyone replies to my posts.

Thanks for your help.

I would uninstall/reinstall EMC again.  If something breaks parts of it, it's always best to clean out the software and reinstall it from scratch.

These software conflicts shouldn't harm a burner. If device manager says it's working okay then all the interface of the burner is fine. It will be the software, which is trying to send commands to the burner, that is broken.

This Invision board is rather erratic that way. One friend has got a total of only 3 emails since the board started, and it has NEVER sent me the newsletter I requested.

Thanks Brendon for your suggestions. I did what you said and uninstalled and reinstalled EMC again with the updates but my burner still will not burn. So, the question is this: Should I just replace the burner, which I know nothing about but have been told it is pretty simple? Or could in be the lens? Or are they one in the same? Or do you have any other suggestion. I am at a loss.

Thanks,

Carl

Try burning a CD, using the native XP software.  If you can't burn one there, it is time to get a new burner.

BTW, did you reboot after running the PX Engine patch?

I did reboot it after downloading PX engine patch and I did try to burn it with the native XP software, so I guess I'll look for a new burner.

I just need a burner to allow me to burn some music CDs. Any suggestions as to what might be a compatible one with my system that is reliable?

Thanks for your help.

Any new burner should work with your computer.  Lite-on, Pioneer, Samsung, and Plextor are good choices.

Well, I replaced the burner with a LiteOn 52X32X52X CD-RW burner and just burned my first CD without problem. So I guess that is what I needed to do - replace the burner. Thanks for all your help. Happy Holidays.

You are welcome, but I would have purchased a DVD burner.  A DVD burner can burn both CD's and DVD's.
