I have Vista Ultimate & Roxio Creator Premier Version: 9.1.573
I want to copy (not a backup) a couple of user directories (C:\user\x & C:\user\y) to a DVD for off site backup. When I add the folders as part of creating the data disk, I get the message "one or more of your selected files could not be added to the project”. Nothing gets added to the copy except for the directory structure of APPDATA.
Nero has no such problem so I don't think it's a Vista problem, more likely a Roxio problem, but I'm not sure.
Any idea on why Roxio doesn't want to copy the C:\USERS directory?
Can't copy c:\USERS folders

The User folder in all probability contains hidden sub folders which are classed as 'system files' and that could be the problem
Try forcing Vista to show hidden folders and try backing up again

I have the exact same problem with Vista Home Premium and Roxio EMC9DE (Dell OEM version). It displays that same error message then just stops. I’ve isolated the problem down to several system folders, like gi7omy suggests, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos, My Documents, etc. I believe these folders are for compatibility with older OS’s. It does not solve the problem to configure Vista to ‘show hidden files’. If I try to open these folders in Windows Explorer I get an ‘access denied’ error even though I have admin rights.
So far Roxio support has not been able to provide me with an acceptable solution. Ideally they need to log the error and continue adding the remaining files & folders or provide a facility for excluding these folders.

I think in all honesty that's a Vista problem more than anything else - what I'd suggest doing is to select all sub folders EXCEPT the ones that are problematic and back those up, ignoring the ones that can't be backed up.
Even in XP, a simple 'copy' if the C:\Documents and Settings folder to a backup drive will fail due to the way that Windows sets the attributes on those - there are some files that just will NOT copy (and I'm talking the basic 'copy' command here)

Thanks for the replies & suggestions.
I always have show system & hidden files enabled. Doesn't help.
Nero copy works.
Simple Windows drag & drop onto a blank DVD works but takes forever.
Roxio doesn't work.

I hear what you are saying but some things copy the the Vista C:\users\x directories just fine.
Windows drag & drop does fine
Nero copy does fine
Roxio Backup does fine
Roxio Data Copy fails miserably
Why does Roxio Backup work great and Roxio Copy fails? I'd use Backup but it is limited to one folder at a time and I have multiple folders (users) to copy/backup on a regular basis. Backup would require much more ongoing work and result in more disks to keep track of.

All I can say for certain is that XP (which isn't as tight on user control as Vista) will NOT let you drag and drop certain folders in 'copy' mode - even to a hard drive on the same machine.
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

That’s basically what Dell tech support suggested I do but that solution prevents me from saving my selections as Roxio projects; new files or folders would be ignored next time. I’d have to select all folders then unselect each problem folder every time I want to do a copy. Certainly not very user friendly.
There is no data in these problem folders. All Roxio has to do is skip over them. Or at least report them as an error then continue to add all other files instead of just puking. I guess it’s time to do some research on this Nero application as a replacement.

It is my thought it is a Vista problem for those who have more than one person using their network and logging into the computer.
I personally have deleted all the locations where Bill Gates and his ilk think I have a burning desire to share my computer. There is only ME logging in and I have my login directory as a shortcut on my desktop. I have had no problems so far accessing my files...except that the computer saves photes and everything as a document.
I also deleted all the so-called "public" directories..who knows what problems that will cause since I don't permit the "public" any access to my computer.
I forgot to mention that I copied directories to CD with drag and drop with no problem. Then I deleted those directories (which WAS complicated). I had to go into each directory and individually change the properties for each prior to deleting.
