the video file type is .AVI, it plays on Windows Media Player just fine.

The avi file is likely a divx or xvid file. If it plays on WMP, you likely have the proper codecs but you might want to check to be sure. Take a look at this pinned post about a divx fix.

If you have the Basic version, sending you the DivxDec file would be useless as Divx is not part of the Basic version.

There is no fix. You have a teaser program - one designed to give you a taste of video editing. If you like it and want to do more you have to buy the full version.
You can probably get EMC 10 for $50. That's a real bargain if you want to upgrade. If you can get the Deluxe, it has a USB capture device for getting analog movies from video equipment to you computer.
