It worked....finally!  Using EMC9  videowave.....after many days and many attempts, I was able to successfully burn a DVD.  I read this forum and switched from Hardware to Software, and that didn't help. It still froze up at 77%.  (In fact my entire computer crashed and I had to do a re-boot).  After opening up the program again, I made sure I was still in Software, but this time I chose a SLOWER burn speed.....and this WORKED.

So for all you moms' out there, that are trying to preserve your home movies, try going to Software from Hardware and then burn at a slower speed..........(providing all else is up to date on your computer!)

First of all, please list your system specs similar to what I have in my signature.
Could you try a burn to an image (iso) file and then use DiscCopier to burn that iso file to a DVD. Many of us have better success going that route.

Thanks - yes, I did try burning to an ISO but that hung up as well. So now I'm reporting that this past weekend I was able to burn 8 home movie DVD's.  (EMC9 and Videowave) But not without some trouble........Some would encode and burn with NO PROBLEMS and then others would HANG.  I found if I played around with Trim it would then move past that point, however, not always.  Sometimes I had to delete the particular place that it was hanging on, and then it would encode correctly and go to burn with no problems.  So I don't feel 100% confident with this program, but at least the home movies are done!

Hint:  Do all you editing and encoding in Video Wave if this continues to be a problem.  In Video Wave, after you have done all your editing, save the project AND select to output (film reel icon above the preview screen) to a mpg2 for DVD best quality.  The encoding will start there and you'll be able to watch it encode the parts that need to be encoded.  It will stop where the problem is and you can do a trouble shoot there pretty easily.  When the encoding is finished and you are ready to make your DVD, simply add that mpg2 file to the production.  It will not be encoded again if the production fits on a standard or DL disc.

I would still recommend creating the ISO file though.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

OK....thanks a bunch for all of your help.  I've still got a few more VHS tapes to convert over. I'll give all of these suggestions a try.   Thanks again.  Elayne
