I have a disk drive that is supposed to be able to burn DVD's but I am gathering now that I need special software to make that happen.  Is that right?  I have Roxio Creator Plus which came with this Dell computer and I use that to burn CD's but it won't burn DVD's.  Is this Creator 10 what I need to have in order to do that?

Thanks.

Yes, EMC 10 will burn to DVD's, provided the drive is capable of that. List what CD/DVD drive do you have and maybe someone here can see if it really is capable of burning DVD's.

My invoice from Dell says it is a 16x DVD+/-RW.

My device manager says it is a HL DT ST DVD+-RW.

Does anybody know if this drive will write to DVD's?

Thanks.

It should but it would also help if you gave the model number. What are you trying to burn to a DVD?

There should be a further designation for the program that came with the Dell like a number (9 ?) and/or a DE.

If you open the Home Application screen, what applications and utilities do you see?  If you list those (there should not be many) perhaps we can give you more advice.

Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

It says:  HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N

That's all the info I could find under Device Manager.

It's LG the GSA-H21N is an OEM model produced for the likes of Dell/HP, not available in retail.

Look at the Dell site it should list the drive. I'm sure it's a 16X + - R/RW Drive.

Now answer sknis question about the program!

"There should be a further designation for the program that came with the Dell like a number (9 ?) and/or a DE"

Your BENQ drive is capable of burning a DVD. You just need now to have the software that will make a production (Suggest using EMC 10 "Videowave" program to build your production and the use "MyDVD" program to do the burning. The EMC program that came with your computer from Dell probably doesn't have all of the various abilities compared to the full EMC 10 version so I can't help with that as I have no knowledge of the Dell EMC program. So far you have not mentioned what type of files you want to use for your DVD, so a little more information about what you plan to do would be helpful.

I'm afraid I don't know what "program" you're talking about or referring to.  I don't think any program to write to DVd's came with the computer.  Only Roxio Creator Plus which allows me to write to Cd's but not DVD's.

Thanks again for helping me here.

It sounds like your Roxio Version is also an OEM.  However, generally if it comes with a burner or computer that has DVD writing capabilities, the DVD writing capabilities of hte program are enabled.

What applications do you have within the Roxil suite that you have?

Well, let's see.  When I click on the Roxio link off the start/programs menu I get the following:

Creator Projects
DLA
Creator Home
Express Labeler

Creator Projects leads to:

RecordNow Audio
RecordNow Copy
RecordNow Data

DLA leads to:

DLA Help

The last two just open the programs.

Is this what you're asking?

Some computers ship with two different programs.  It sound like you are looking at the program that burns audio CDs.  Look in Windows Start Programs (or the Vista equivalent) for another program.  I would thank that it would be something like My DVD or DVD to Go.  How old is the computer ?

I bought this computer last February.  It's a Dell 320 Optiplex model.  As far as I know, there is no program on here that will burn DVD's.  Mostly what I want to do is to bring camcorder home movies into the computer and then transfer them to DVD's.

You should have the Cyberlink software on your computer.  Go to the Cyberlink web page for help since that is a competitive product.

I misread the product; I thought it was this.

I guess that the OP needs to make an investment after talking to Dell on Monday to confirm that there is no video editing software on new computers.
