A friend had her dance recorded while on a cruise.  Someone on the cruise created a DVD for her and played it for her.  When she returned it would not play on her DVD player or on her computer.  She asked me to try it on my equipment.  The dvd disc is not recognized by my machine either.

The media is a Sony DVD-r ver 2.1 disc.  Windows Explorer shows the disk as empty, and I do not see any Video_ts folder that I would expect.  However, Roxio Easy Media Creator tools show the following disc information:  DVD-R, Closed, Multiborder, Data.  There are 9 zones and a total of 2.5Gb is used.

Using the copy tool, I was able to copy dvd images to my hard drive in the Sonic Global Image (sgi) format.  Neither Pinnacle nor MyDVD would import froman sgi file.  I tried to get an iso file but the tool did not allow a save to the ISO format.

I tried to "finalize" the disc which resulted in exception message "Please insert an appendable data disc that is cd media or dvd write-once media."

My system is an HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista with an Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A drive.

I would like to recover this disk for my friend.  Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Paul

If who ever made the DVD played it for her, what kind of player or hardware did that person play it on ?? Some DVD players are pretty sensitive as to what type of media they will play, but most newer DVD players will play DVD +/- media. Also, what program did the maker use to make the DVD ?? and what recorder did they use to record her dance ??

From what I can find a Multiborder disc is some kind of session based data disc.Being that it wouldn't have a video_ts folder.Windows Explorer should at least be able to read the first session (or zone I think). Why it can't I'm not sure. You might try and search the net for info on MultiBorder DVD's.

Also it occurs to me that if you got an sgi that you used the copy app from the Home application.Try using Disc Copier instead and you should be able to create an iso. Then you should be able to use the image where you want.

Frank, thanks for the response.  I asked my friend to contact the ship people to get this information.  This might take a couple of days.

Played it for her on what, with what?

In V 9 tools (programs) or utilities ( Home Page) open DVDInfo Pro. Click the info tab at top with the disc in the drive. Now click the clip board icon top right, paste the info in a post here.
I think it's one of these New Sony disc's pictured here. It has a Media ID (MID) SONY16D1....

I did some looking via Google and it seems that multi-session is for CD while multi-border is for DVD and means that files were added.  I believe that each zone is an added file.

Windows Explorer is not able to view any files on this disk.  I have tried on both my XP desktop and my Vista laptop.  Both are new machines and current on service.  I will try Disc Copier and see what happens.

Yes, it is the Sony disc you show.

I found the disc info using Roxio Creator Basic v9 which came as part of my HP Pavilion laptop.  I can see the data using the tools, but it does not allow me to copy it to the clipboard.  I do not see an info tab with a clip board option.  Do I need to upgrade?

The first two lines! "Media Information Region information N/A not a DVD-VIDEO"

Don't know how or what he played it in for your friend. Question, "Played it for her on what, with what?"

It could be video as data, download the freeIsoBuster 2.3, DVD, CD, BD and HD DVD recovery software, Download Page. Let it look at the disc and see what it says.

Sony claims it's a 16x disc but the highest Available Write Descriptor is 8X, don't burn any higher than 8x!

Not sure here,  I don't do much session writing. DVDInfo Pro is showing "Free Capacity 0.00GB/0.01GB" like the disc isn't closed. Hopefully someone that does and actually uses DVDInfo Pro could tell us.

What a DVDVideo disc should look like. This one shows a 16x Available Write Descriptor.

Hello folks,

From the DVDInfoPro results Paul showed, the DVD is a DATA DVD-R. It's likely to have video files such as AVIs or MPGs, rather than the VOBs and IFOs you find on a video DVD.

An empty DVD-R has 412,352,512 free blocks. DVDInfoPro says that the disc has 5,210,112 free blocks, so it must be open. That's about 0.05 GB (DVDInfoPro says 0 to 0.1) which means that much more than 2.5GB of space has been used, nearly 2 GB extra. Perhaps the rest is overhead from the multi-border burning? I've not measured it in DVDs yet, only CDs.

In any event, if you can't get the DVD finalized that could explain why you can't see a proper Table Of Contents, and why the DVD could be used on the machine that burned it but not on any others.

I see two possibilities for recovering the files.
(1) is a recovery program such as Isobuster as cdanteek suggests, or CDRoller. They can be found at isobuster.com and cdroller.com, respectively, and their trial mode will show you what files they can see. You have to buy the program to actually recover the files.
(2) is to use the .GI file(s) that the copy program gave you. [sgi is silicon graphics, .GI is Sonic] You should use the copier program to burn a disc from the Global Image files, hoping that it will produce a disc with a proper TOC and not just a duplicate of the open disc. Roxio's Disc Copier would always finalize discs burned from an image, so we have to hope the inferior Sonic copier can manage that too.

I can't say do these things and it WILL work because I don't have the disc to tap with a blunt object, and I haven't seen one like this before. However I do hope an educated guess might help you.

Regards,
Brendon

I downloaded IsoBuster which showed track two with a video folder that contained four files: .ifo, .vob, .bup.  There were two .vob files.  I purchased IsoBuster and extracted the files to my hard disk.  I will see what I can do using Pinnacle to create a proper dvd.

Also, as requested, I spoke to my friend who will contact the cruise ship to find out what equipment was used to originally record the video and how the disk was created.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.  I was able to use Isobuster to extract the VOB and BUP files.  I will try to use these with Pinnacle.  I like your suggestion #2 which will be easy and will try after the weekend.  I have chores for the wife that take priority for me.

Hi Paul,

Goodness!  If it has VOB, BUP, and IFOs it was trying to be a DVD Video disc not a data disc, so no wonder things were confusing. If you have the files now, you may be able to just burn from a video folder on the hard drive to recreate a video compliant DVD.

In any event, you're right to set your priorities. This is 'only a hobby . . . '  smile.gif

The folder with tthe video files noted above is labeled VFR Video Recordings rather than the usual Video_ts folder name.  Is anyone familiar this folder and know what would create it?

According to Sonic's Glossary of Terms (here)

I finally received a response from the cruise ship.  The dvd was made using an old Phillips set-top player/recorder.  This device had a history where sometimes the output was not "finalized".  The cruise line has since replaced the Phillips with a new Sony.  So sending the disk back for repar is not an option.

I tried several ideas that were recommended by different people.

. I copied the disk using EMC v9.  This disk did was also not recognized by Windows Vista Explorer.
. I extracted ISO images using ISOBUSTER and then burned these to a new disk.  That did not work either.
. I used ISOBUSTER to extract the .ifo and .vbo files and saved then to a hard drive file.  I was able to view the .vob files using the VLC media viewer.  Using VLC, I was able to see the full dvd and see that it was of good quality both video and sound.
. I was unable to get my Pinnacle Studio 10 to accept the .vob files as input.  Also, Studio 10 was unable to see these files on the dvd.  So, no luck there.
. I purchased Prism Media Converter to convert the .vob files.  The resulting files do not show properly on either Windows Media viewer or VLC.  On VLC, the video starts normally with good video and audio, but after one minute the video stops and freezes on one frame while the audio continues.  I asked for help from Prism support who sent me a new codec to try.  I tried the new codec which did not fixe the problem.  Here is the codec:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite..._Codec_Pack.htm

. I also realized that my harddrive was full, and suspected that a lack of space could be part of my problems.  I bought aToshiba external hard drive and offloaded a lot of files.  I also cleaned up my drive opf temporary files and then defrag.    I then repeated my above experiments, but this did not imporve or fix my problems.

I used ISObuster to extract a .cue to see if there was anything useful.  Here is that file.

Just interested.   huh.gif

If you are using a Pinnacle product, why did you come here to a Sonic/Roxio forum??????  Yes, I know we're good but Pinnacle also has some pretty smart people on their forums also.  They, of course would be much more familiar with their product and what it can do.

Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Missed that part and now I see an earlier brief reference to MyDVD.  I just saw Pinnacle Studio 10 mentioned as what he was going to use from here on and he explained what he had used Studio 10 for in trying to work with the VOB files.  I doubt that using a Roxio product would be of help but he could have at least posted that he was working with that.
