Hello
I burned some pictures to my cd-r with Sonic Record Now. Later I tried to add some more information but it appears as though the second burn wrote over the first. I thought you could write to a cd-r more than once. Is there something I missed so the burner would only burn additional info after the first not over it?
Thank you.

I usually use "Creator Classic" to burn a cd-r and if I want to add files to it later you need to make sure you don't close the first burn. If you close the first burn then you will never be able to add files to that particular disc later. Leaving the cd-r burn open, then you can later burn additional files to it which is a multi-session disc. But any time even with a multi-session burn, once you close the disc, then it's all over for adding files later.

I'm not sure how whichever Version you are using works, but either it will automaticly import the TOC [Table of Contents] or it will ask you if you want to import the previous session.

If you were asked, and assumed that meant that as with a Hard Drive that meant write it again and nixed it, then you would only see the second session.

I'm not sure if there are any tools within RecordNow to check that - altho a recovery program such as cdroller (www.cdroller.com) or ISOBuster (www.isobuster.com) should be able to - the "trial" Version is free, to let you know if anything is there; but you have to pay to get any files back.

I'm sure someone will be along who knows more about the program will be along eventually - won't you, Brendon?

If it's a CD-R, then all of your original data is there... but as was said, it may not be visible if the first session wasn't imported. As with Lynn & Frank, I use Creator Classic, not RecordNow, so I don't know how it goes about importing the previous session... apparently not very well. wink.gif Earlier versions of Easy CD Creator came with an option to open unlinked sessions, which would allow you to access your old data if it was orphaned, called Session Selector. I haven't seen that since ECDC V5 Deluxe. So, Lynn's suggestion for ISOBuster or CD Roller may be your best bet.

Alternatively, you can try this. Make sure you have a backup copy of the current set of pictures you burned to your CD-R. Open RecordNow, or Creator Classic and insert the disc with the missing pictures. Go to the option to import a previous session. Hopefully it will ask you which session to import, if it does, choose the first session. Now add a couple of files to the project and burn it. That should let you access the files from the first session, whereupon you can copy them back to your HD, and write a new disc with all the pictures.

Hope that helps!

I do not care about the photos I overwrote; my goal is to learn how you can burn one session and leave it so that the next time I use the cd-r it will not overwrite but will write additionally to the disk.
Frank suggested I do not close the session unless I'm done with the disk SO, now I have to find out how to do that?
When the burn is done there is a button on the bottom of the box where it says "done" in yellow letters - Does this sound like the place where I DO NOT click
to keep the disc open so I can write to it again.
It is so strange that such a simple process is so hard to research. You would think the Sonic Record Now help would discuss this.
To make matters wose when I allowed the active X so I could read the tutorial it disturbed my msie 6 so I am alwys getting an error messge "windows has encountered a problem and must shut down"I guess the 6.5.0 is too old for xp and is in conflict.
After reading this lengthy problem please try to find some resolve or at least let me know how you do not overwrite as i did.
Thank you very much.

Hello Pete,

I have RecordNow! installed. It is set by default to do what you are wanting, and it physically can't overwrite a CD-R. Your earlier data will be on the CD, although they don't appear in the disc directory because of some mishap. If the missing files were important, set the disc aside for data recovery.
There is no option to open an earlier session, it should happen automatically. [This is 'simple' software, so you have less control. sad.gif ]

Here's how it should work:
In RecordNow! at the Home position, look to the right near the top. Under the red X you'll see a question mark, a spanner, and a folder. Click on the spanner and an Options page opens. Click on Data.

Under Write-Once DVD Compatability, make sure the radio button is clicked to allow more than one recording.

If you record a disc it will be ejected when the burn is done. The next time you are running RecordNow! set for a data disc and insert this same CD you should get a display something like this, showing the previous contents.

If you don't see the previous contents come up then something's amiss and it might be a good idea to leave that disc alone and try a new disc.
If all goes well you add further files/folders to the project and then click on Burn.

I hope this clarifies things some.

I am sorry to have taken so long to reply but I have had some problems with connectivity.
Thank youall so much for all of your help
I think I may have had a bad disk.
I will try again and I wanted to ask one thing.
When I burn a disk I do as the writer says so there is not much room for error I have ver3 6.0.5 by the way.
When it is done there is a yellow glowing button on the bottom waiting to be clicked. I wonder If I am supposed to click it or not. It may be that by not clicking it the disk is still open to new additions and by clicking it I close the disk.
I leery of help as I think it is there I allowed an active x for the tuorial and all my problems began.
What do you think of that button?

Hi Pete,

We're all having problems with connectivity. This board is running like a sack of oddbits tied in the middle with string! sad.gif
It's hosted by Invision, and Invision have done something bad to it and are taking forever to fix it (if they're actually working on it).

What is the yellow glowing button you speak of? I don't have version 6 sorry, but on version 7 I get left with this box at the end of a data burn

Attached Image: monthly_01_2008/post-208-1200956895.jpg

When I mouse over any of those 4 buttons then button will turn yellow. I click the "Done" button and I'm returned to the data disc home menu which asks me to pick between creating or appending to a data disc; making a data image; or making an exact copy of a disc.

If what you see after the burn is different, can you describe it please?

Regards,
Brendon

Windows Media Player 11 also has caused problems with some RecordNow versions.

I am pasting to this forum b/c I keep getting dropped.
I am trying to attach a pik where the directions for Sonic Record Now ver 6.0.5 say you can only write to a cd-r once.
Could we conclude this ability or disability depends upon the burner?
Please get back to me so I can conclude my investigation.
I see the box I pasted did not come out right it is supposed to format as "cd-r write to Once"
I guess the connectivity problem persists.
Thank you

Pete,

This Invision bulletin board that Roxio is hosted on is misbehaving and crashing Internet Explorer. I'm sorry, but I can't make them fix it. Writing your message in Notepad and then pasting it into the reply is a good option in the meantime.

Clicking on the 'Done' button takes you back to the data home menu. It doesn't do anything more to the disc.

I see the table you tried to post - it seems you can't cut and paste tables into a message as they don't hold their formatting sad.gif
That phrase "can be written to only once" means you can't erase a CD-R and write over the same area again, you can only write to any area once. It is quite common to write files in "sessions" to a CD-R, and you can keep adding sessions to the disc until it is full.

In RecordNow! 6 you should have an Options screen which does the same thing as the screen I show in post #7 in this topic. Can you find that? It should have an option similar to the one in my screen, where it talks about using a disc for one recording only, or for more than one recording. Do you see such an option?
