Hello all: I have, what I hope is a minor problem. I have recently installed EMC 10 on my PC (Realtek High Definition Audio) and have made several sucessful DVD's. I burn the project to an .iso, then copy that. My problem is this. On the audio track of all my DVD's, I'm experiencing an audio drop out, lasting 2 or 3 seconds. It seems to happen once a minute. I'm using TDK DVD-R. Also, I might add that I turn off all virus protection\firewall\spyware blockers. I've also tried burning direct to a blank disc at the slowest possible speed. Can anyone help? grandpabruce? ggrussel? beerman? sknis? Any other "digital gurus" I might have missed?

Is the drop out on both a settop player and a pc DVD player? Was this encoded at DVD best quality 9 Mbit/s or Mbps?

TDK doesn't make media, you need a disc identifier tool, DVDInfo Pro, Nero CDDVDSpeed, or DVD Identifier to check the media ID (MID)

I also am having this problem. If I use MyDVD to output to ISO file (I am having problems burning directly to a DVD in this program, but I believe my problem is that I need a dual layer DVD) and if I do a "Video copy and convert" I lose my menu bells and whistles but maintain my audio but if I copy the ISO using Burn to Disc, I maintain the menus, chapters, etc, but my audio will drop off throughout the DVD.

Maybe by using a dual layer DVD, I will be able to burn directly to a disc in MyDVD and maybe this will solve the problem? Sorry, this is a project of photos with audio.  Also, when I preview in MyDVD, the audio sounds great and no drop offs. BTW - I can burn to a DVD directly from MyDVD only if use 12X and then the audio is very splotchy, quality is poor and drop offs are longer

Many thanks for your reply, cdanteek. Finished DVD does play OK on my PC using Cineplayer, no drop outs. I will try it on a friends settop tomorrow. My DVD set top is a Samsung Model No. DVD-V5500. How do I check for the quality of the encoding?
BTW, the blank DVD media I'm using is TDK DVD-R 1-16x 4.7gb. I also downloaded the free version of DVD Info Pro, is this the information your looking for?

I played my finished DVD on two of my friends set top players and it played OK with no drop outs. So it's definetly my Samsung player. Should I still investigate the other info you suggested, disc speed, etc? Many thanks for all your help!

Pop the cover off that Samsung DVD player and gently swab the laser with a Qtip and Isopropyl alcohol, see if that cures the problem. Next time buy Taiyo Yuden Premium Line DVD media  here or Verbatim media at places like Best Buy.

Thanks! I'll try it. Also, I've read thru some other posts, and it seem some other users with Samsung players have the same problem. BTW, does it matter if I buy DVD-R or DVD+R? What's the difference?

Physically there is a difference between a DVD-R disc and a DVD+R disc that is made during the production process. During the production of a DVD-R disc the lead-in is pre-embossed (pre-written).

Booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can’t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can’t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that’s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.

So after burning a DVD-R, DVD+R, and a DVD+R Booktype changed to DVD-ROM. A disc identifier tool ( DVDinfoPro, Disc Identifer, CDDVDSpeed). The -R Disc & Booktype will be -R, the +R Disc & Booktype will be +R, and the +R Booktype changed to DVD-ROM, will read, Disc +R & Booktype DVD-ROM.

You need a Drive and  Drive software  to change the  booktype field (bitsetting).

To identify your drive in XP. Right click my computer and click properties. The system properties window opens, click the Hardware tab and then click device manager. The Device Manager Window opens, from the top view, make sure a dot is next to view devices by type. Click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives, post what it reads?

Click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives, post what it reads?

cd

It reads:
HP DVD Writer 840b
TSST Corp DVD-ROM TS-H352C

I updated using a blank CD-R, then went to the option "For Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6". There wasn't any option for EMC 10.

10. After the firmware update is complete, remove the CD from the optical drive and restart the system.

Did you do that and did the firmware update work (change the firmware #)?

The  "Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6" was instructions to burn the firmware update to a CD-R disc, that is all!!

Do you need instructions to burn the firmware disc Image to a CD-R?

For Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6:

1. Click START on the taskbar, and choose (All) Programs, Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, and then click Creator Classic.
2. In the File Menu, click Record Disc from Image.
3. Navigate to the folder containing the update file (C:\SoftPaq\sp26764), select the sp26764.iso file and click OPEN.
4. Insert the blank recordable CD (CD-R) into the drive.
5. Click OK in the Record Setup window and wait for Roxio to complete the update CD.

First off, I wish to thank you for sticking with me and for all your help and patience. I hope others reading this post will benefit from it. BTW, I also purchased a stack of Verbatim DVD+R 16x. We'll see if that helps any.
Anyway, I sucessfully followed ALL of HP's instructions (as shown above)1 thru 6. I left the CD in the drive and restarted my system. It seemed to be installing OK and was waiting for further on screen instructions when the error messages I posted previously showed up. It never completed the firmware update, therefore did not change the firmware #.
My current # is:    IDE\CDROMHP_DVW_WRITER_840B________________H186______\5&34F237E7&0&0.0.0

I have been working on a similar problem (audio drop out of about two seconds every minute or so on a Samsung set-top player when playing home-burned DVDs).

In my limited testing, what I notice is that if I burn using the LPCM audio format (File > Project Settings > Audio > LPCM) instead of AC3, I do not experience the audio drop out. My limited research indicates, however, that as an uncompressed audio format, LPCM can take up a lot of space (although if DVD burning is dependent on time not space, I don't know how/if this applies), and that LPCM can cause odd behavior in some players. (Not a help if you are sending DVDs to others.)

Maybe the gurus would comment on benefits/drawbacks to using the LPCM format, if any?
