I finally looked at the report I kept telling IE 6 not to send, and it refers to a problem with urlmon.dll - so I googled it, and got this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679
I tried the first fix, and have spent a few minutes trying to crash IE 6, and so far it's held.
Basicly, it's a Microsoft problem that appeared after the last IE 6 "improvement" in the monthly Microsoft updates - if this does indeed fix it.

Er ...
... it didn't crash, but claimed there was a problem and would have to close when I hit the x in the upper right.
But that's what it did some other places where I logged in but didn't log out; it didn't do a mid-process crash.

re-did it with mshtml.dll, and it doesn't crash much at all anymore. Altho most of the crashes seem to be at this website - other than that, it usually can be closed without encountering an error causing it to close ...
