I've been using EMC9 for about 6 months. Last week, I started to get an error message when using DVD Express saying that VideoWave had encountered an error and the program closed. I uninstalled and reinstalled EMC9 several times, used a PC Cleaner and a Registry Cleaner, but still got the same messsage. Then my DVD writer stopped working. This has been replaced by a repairer and was working. EMC9 still would not work.
I then decided to follow the instructions for a Clean Uninstall as detailed on the Roxio site. I have followed it to the letter.
I have inserted the disc to reinstall EMC9 and, guess what, my dvd drive has completely disappeared!
I am in despair!
Can anyone please, please help!
I just want my DVD drive back and then I shall dump the program in the dustbin.
Gail

PS I have just tried the link to the Microsoft site to restore a CD drive. Still not working

Does windows see the drive in device manager?

In XP, right click my computer and click properties. The system properties window opens, click the Hardware tab and then click device manager. The Device Manager Window opens, from the top view, make sure a dot is next to view devices by type. Click the + next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives, post what it reads? Or are there yellow exclamation marks/ error codes by the drives?

Is the link below what you tried at the MS site?
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben...p;x=12&y=13

If Roxio's software (is installed) and don't see your drives. The below patch has helped.

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply.
The drive has totally disappeared - it's not even in device manager. I tried to reinstall the driver, but got a message to say that the driver has already been installed and would I like to override it.
The link you gave for the MS site was the one I used.
I have deleted Roxio now.

Usually a Optical Drive is on the secondary IDE Channel, unless you have a new pc with SATA a drive? Locate the secondary IDE channel in device manager, click the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Then just right click on the secondary IDE channel and click uninstall. Reboot the pc and the system will reinstall the drive and it's drivers, let it boot it takes a little more time, then go into device manager and look for the DVD Drive. See if that does the trick.

Thanks for your help.

I uninstalled the secondary IDE channel as you suggested. I rebooted the laptop and I got a message saying found IDE channel.
Sadly, still no DVD drive though.

Are there any Roxio EMC Sonic, entries left in control panel, add remove programs? Repeat the MS site link procedure I posted above slow and carefully. If that don't work I'm at a loss, unless your drive died at the same time. When you put a DVD in the drive do the lights on the front of the drive work like usual?

Hi there

There were 2 Sonic entries left on the add/remove programs and they are no longer there now. I then tried removing the secondary IDE channel again. Still the same.

I have now run the MS link. On the download guided help, I get an error message - Resolve CD Access Problem - the Upper Filters and Lower Filters registry values that can cause CD access problems do not exist on your computer. Click Help and Support on the Start menu for additional support options for this issue. I got the same message last time and went on to access the Registy exactly as per the instructions in the link.

I do get a flashing light on the front of the drive when I put a disc in and I can hear it spin.  It is still not recognised anywhere. By the way,the DVDdrive onlt replaced earlier this week!

Gail,

A few questions, in earlier post's you talk of deleting the program, do you mean control panel, add remove programs, that would be called uninstall, or how?

At the MS site have you looked manually, in the registry for the upper and lower filter entries?

The PC Cleaner and a Registry Cleaner could of damaged windows or the registry and caused this problem!

You could check for virus, spyware and or malware. Go into the bios on boot and see if the drives are shown there. A system restore, you might not have any now that go back far enough.

Could you take it to the tech that installed the new DVD Drive? Or call and ask for advice?

Hi there

Yes, I did uninstall EMC via add/remove programs.
On the MS Site, I did follow the intructions manually for the filter entries.
I musdt admit, I didn't look in the BIOS to see if the drive was there.
I finally gave in this afternoon and returned the laptop to the repairer. I hate admitting defeat!

Just one question - can a program cause a piece of hardware such as a DVD drive to gol wrong/die?

Thank you very much for all your help and input.

Not that I know of! I have seen a bad firmware flash take a drive out. Since the lights worked and the drive as you said spunup, I wouldn't think the drive is at fault. Since it is a laptop I'm wondering if the tech got the IDE cable seated correct, when he installed the replacement drive? Please let us now what the repairman finds, won't you.
