Hi
I just bought and installed a Plextor DVD-RW drive. When I put the installation disc containing Roxio EMC 9 software, it would not start at all. I heard a whirring noice but nothing happened. I called Plextor, they said it was an auto start probelm [until this install my CD rom was playing ok, and is still playing ok in the second drive]. He then thought it was a disc problem and he will send me a new disc.

In the meanwhile, I put the same disc in my laptop and it started immediately. I copied the Roxio to my USB and then installed it in the new machine. Now the DVD starts the Roxio - Cine player, I can see the disc selected and check marked. I hit play, I hear the disc whirring and nothing happens for several [more than 3 or so minutes], then the disc stops and nothing happens.

Can some one tell me where the problem is?
[It is a Dell Optiplex 170 L, has a gig of memory, I updated Microsoft.net to version 2, I checked the registry files to make sure that it kosher as recommended by Microsoft for auto start]

Is this a Plextor drive problem?? [doesn't appear to be since the drive is working] or is it a ROxio Easy Media Creator 9 problem.

Please help. I can not play any DVD on this drive.

Thanks.
Dave.

Davidmo,

Forgive me, but your message is confusing me no end. I've read it carefully about 5 times without anything getting better so I don't think it's me.
Perhaps if we go through it carefully you can either re-phrase or explain it?

You say

-what's the model number of the Plextor drive?
-the drive wouldn't read your EMC 9 disc, so Plextor is going to send you another EMC 9 disc? Did they supply you with the first one?
-your CD ROM plays ok in the other drive. What CD ROM is this?

If the CD-ROM you're talking about is the EMC 9 disc and it's reading fine in another drive, then your Plextor drive is not working properly.

-It's sounding more like "the disc" is an EMC9 disc. Is this 'new machine" the one with the Plextor drive?
-You've installed EMC9 in the 'new machine' and it looks as if the software's working. Cineplayer is, anyway. But you can't play a DVD in it??

If the machine you're trying to play a DVD in is the one with the Plextor drive, then your Plextor drive is not working properly.

-You haven't said anything to indicate the Plextor drive is working, except that it whirrs. Is there something you've seen but not told us?

Unless you have seen something you haven't mentioned that shows it is working, then your Plextor drive is not working properly.

Are you asking if your drive should start the AUTORUN process when the Roxio CD is inserted?

Thanks for the replies.

I have a Dell Optoplex which came with a CD ROM. I bought a Plextor 800A DVD drive and installed it. The Plextor as the master and the CD Rom that came with the computer as the slave. [I used cable select]

After installation I inserted the DVD that came with Plextor containing the Roxio 9 software in to the drive. The drive started but nothing showed up on the monitor. When I checked my computer, it showed that the drive was functioning properly. I called Plextor tech support. He said may be the autorun feature was not working in my computer and may the installation disc that came with the Plextor drive was corrupt and he was going to send me a new one.

Over the week end, I told myself, if it is the software that is needed then, I will copy the software using my lap top DVD ROM and upload it to my Optiplex. Which I did. Now when I put in a DVD, in the Plextor 800A, it starts, the ROxio opens up and I can see the files. But when I click on play button in Roxio 9, nothing happens.

I updated my Bios, updated my video cards drivers from Dell web site. I updated the .net to latest version.

Any thoughts as to why Roxio 9 is not playing any [I tried several, including commerical DVDs from Block busters] DVD's?

Thanks.
David

What program in Roxio 9 are you trying to use? (I suspect Cineplayer) What version and release of Roxio 9 are you using? (Launch Creator Classic and do an about under the help menu)

I am using cine player to view the DVDs. It is the latest version that is available on the website. The only other upgrade is the upgrade for Vista. And I do have vista, I use XP.

Please take a little time to proofread your posts.  You last post said:

"And I do have vista, I use XP."   Does that mean you have a dual boot computer?  or was there supposed to be a not in there somewhere.

Also earlier you said that you had tried some commercial discs but if you went to Windows, My Computer, were they recognized as commercial discs?  Note I did not say did they play?

My guess is that the burner is bad with the read heads misaligned.  Remember there are more than one so the fact (?) that it can read a CD doesn't mean that it Will read a DVD.  I know that it is new but it could have been dead in the box.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Sorry I should proof read my posts.
I do not have Vista, I do have XP.
I think you are right, it was a DVD burner dead on arrival.
I sent the whole unit back to Plextor today.
I am waiting for a replacement unit.
I will post if there is any change in the situation.
Appreciate all your help.
David.

I have never seen a Plextor that didn't have the self diagnostic test, in fact one had to run the test before Plextor would RMA the drive! Is this the software that came with the drive, below? If so it's OEM not full version retail software. No updates from a Roxio website for that software.

Read this link on connecting the drive, click here.

Thank you.
I was unable to do the diagnostic test, because their installation DVD will not even run on the drive. So they took it  back with me having to run the diagnostics.
